In order to fully understand how this discovery led to the development of an important drug that has been used since its creation, let us turn back a few years before the event that would eventually bring Fleming his honour. In 1928, a strange bacterial infection known as pneumonia was running through hospitals all across Europe. It was at this time that the bacteria that caused the infection was discovered. It was this bacteria, known as "Staphylococcus aureus", which would later become the reason for Fleming’s discovery. Two years later, in 1930, it was after continued research in this bacteria that Fleming had proven that in order to prevent the spread of this infection, antibiotics should be applied to both the skin and directly into wounds in order to treat patients. He called these drugs ‘penicillin’ after its discoverer Fleming’s discovery of it. The second person honoured with a Nobel Prize was Marie Curie, wife of her husband Pierre Curie. She was awarded with this prize in for her discovery in radiation caused by polonium, in honor of her husband. As the story goes, French physicist Pierre Curie was researching ways to study radioactive substances when he came across a substance that was even more radioactive. By ingesting the substance, Pierre Curie had managed to get himself very ill, but his treatment also managed to treat many other patients who were suffering from similar symptoms. The treatment became so well known that it made it possible for Marie Curie to get stuck with the search for this substance she began with her husband, which would later lead to her winning the Nobel Prize.
