The film tells the story of two brothers, Sameer and Rimzim, living in present-day Mumbai, whose fathers died while working together on a project 25 years ago. The story is based on the concept of reincarnation. Aamir Khan plays Sameer who is a struggling actor trying to make it big in Bollywood with his friend Parthavi (Preity Zinta). Saif Ali Khan plays Rimzim, who runs an NGO that helps people suffering from incurable diseases.The soundtrack featured eight songs composed by Anu Malik with lyrics written by Javed Akhtar. The music was released on 24 August 2001. The film was shot over a period of three months in London, Paris, Milan and India. Dil Chahta Hai was also the first Bollywood film to be shot entirely in high definition format.It premiered on 11 October 2001 at the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC) theatre in Mumbai, to wide critical acclaim. It was released on 12 October 2001 across the country. The film underperformed at the box office but received several awards, including two National Film Awards and six Filmfare Awards. The critics praised the directorial skills of Farhan Akhtar for his honest portrayal of today's youth and its unconventional theme for Indian cinema. In 2005, it was remade into Telugu as Minnalaa starring Srikanth, in Kannada as Tadiyana Kanagalu starring Yash and in Bengali as To Live in Love with Rituparno Ghosh.Sameer Shaikh (Aamir Khan) is a struggling actor trying to make it big in Bollywood with his friend Parthavi Desai (Preity Zinta). Sameer's father died when he was young and his stepfather, Mahendra Pratap Singh (Anupam Kher), is always encouraging him to pursue a stable career. Rimzim Ali Khan (Saif Ali Khan) is an idealistic writer living in Mumbai. Rimzim's father Khurshid Ali Khan (Reema Lagoo) was Sameer's father's friend and partner, who died while working on a shipyard project 25 years ago. The project was never completed, continuing to haunt Sameer and Rimzim.Parthavi, who has come to Mumbai from the United States for two months, wants to make it big in Bollywood by acting in a film produced by her uncle Viren Shah (Sachin Khedekar). Parthavi befriends Sameer at a party thrown by Viren.
