The Telangana movement was first initiated by students and youth of the region on 24 September 2009. The seed for this protest was first sown in the Andhra Pradesh government's decision to form a new state called Telangana, on 2 June 2013.Ever since then, the people of Telangana had been demanding that they too deserve a new state wherein they can govern their own interests independently. Thus, on 10 January 2014, members from various political parties such as TRS (Telangana Rashtra Samithi), Congress and others had gathered at Osmania University to demand that the Central Government of India take responsibility of creating a separate state for Telanganites out of the existing State: Andhra Pradesh. They had promised that they would remain peaceful and would not resort to violence. When the students of Osmania University were negotiating for their demands with the Central Government, the Telangana agitation was intensified in 2010–11. The people of the region were staging shutdowns in various places, including Hyderabad, Vishakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Ongole. The shutdowns had become a matter of routine by mid-2011. They lasted for weeks on end, gradually increasing in numbers until they nearly encompassed the entire State of Andhra Pradesh. The Chief Minister of the then newly formed state of Andhra Pradesh, K. Rosaiah submitted a proposal to the then Prime Minister of India: Dr. Manmohan Singh for separating Telangana from Andhra Pradesh and creating Telangana as a new State. However, this proposal was rejected by the Central Government and hence this had led to widespread anger and protest across Telangana.By August 2011, public anger had resulted in violent attacks on government offices and establishments as well as non-Telangana business establishments like Indian Oil Petrol stations and shopping malls like GVK One Mall. The organisers of these violent attacks were mostly people from neighbouring states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka etc. The agitations reached its peak when on 9 September 2011, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) leader K Chandrasekhara Rao began his indefinite hunger strike at the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Hyderabad. This had led to further uproar across the region. The protesters were demanding that the Central Government immediately acknowledge their demand for Telangana and that they immediately create a separate state without any further delay. They also demanded that Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Kiran Kumar Reddy should immediately resign from his post. The violent protests continued for quite some time until on 30 January 2012, the Union Cabinet approved the proposal of forming Telangana as a new state out of Andhra Pradesh.

This movement had gained momentum with the active support of students and youth organisations of different districts in Telangana region. Reliance Life Insurance Company Limited was only one among many other organisations who supported this movement. There were several protests organised across Hyderabad, Seemandhra region as well as various parts of Telangana Region to put pressure on the central government for setting up a separate state of Telangana.
