The song is therefore also known as “Khamboji Panthal” or “Kambhoji Song” or “Kammavarcha Khamboji Pannal” meaning a poem sung in raga kambhoji. The last two lines of the song are sung in raga Jahnavi which has no musical notes to it. This is known as “Thaammaam Kalavathu Koodal” meaning “Song in poetic meter sung in raga Jahnavi”. The poem is believed to have been composed by the poet Madurai Narayanan Chettiyar during the Chola period of Tamil history around 930 AD. The dancer/musician-poet Madurai N.C. Chidambaranar was also a devotee of Lord Shiva and is believed to have composed this song in the same period.The Pannalanikathakal or "The Seven Ancient Poetic Verses" is a collection of seven Tamil Poems from different poetic meters written in the Dravidian language by various Tamil poets from various different periods. These poems are found in different locations in temples or Buddhist monasteries across South India. These Pannalanikathakal were discovered by a team of scholars headed by Papanasam Sivan in 1944.
