It stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in lead roles, with Madhu Sapre, Yogeeta Bali and Dilip Prabhakar in supporting roles. The film's songs were composed by a team of five for which Anu Malik won his first Filmfare Award as musical director. It was released on 18 April 1995 across 2,000 screens worldwide to positive reviews from critics. It grossed over in the overseas market and was a blockbuster in Pakistan, and was declared a blockbuster in both India and Pakistan.The film opens with a young Delhi girl Kiran (Aamir Khan's sister-in-law Aisha Khan) who has been an orphan since childhood, trying to get friends of her age to play with her by teasing her but is harassed away by people of their age due to the childlike behaviour. Her mother Durga (Vijayashanti), who always wanted her daughter to be independent from her family, influences Kiran into following a job of a lady's maid in the house of a rich widower Mr. Sharma (Shakti Kapoor). She motivates her by saying that it's her dream to see her own daughter as a working woman, like herself. She gets selected as a maid and is introduced as such to the family of Mr. Sharma (Shakti Kapoor). Sharma has two sons; Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and Ravi (Dilip Prabhakar), who are professional football players and do not seem to be making much money in their careers. They are involved in affairs with Bani (Yogeeta Bali) and Sonia Sahni respectively, both of whom are gold diggers.Kiran never gets an opportunity to speak, because she is always busy with household chores when the family is at home. She is also abused by all the servants. She can't understand them well, though she tries much because she wants to talk to someone. The only person who treats her politely is Mr. Sharma's personal assistant Arjun (Amrish Puri), whom she comes to know that he's a widower and has two children, one of which is married. He also has an affair with Bani, which Kiran knew about but was not upset for it since Arjun asked her not to reveal his affair with Bani, as it will create chaos in the family. Also because she was afraid that if Raj or Ravi found out he would beat him up or even kill him for bringing disgrace to the family name. Kiran's heart melts when she finally gets a chance to speak to a boy whom Mr. Sharma's secretary had asked her to meet. She talks to him and is surprised when he doesn't understand her too well, as he couldn't understand what she was trying to tell him. He only understood the first part of it, which was that she wanted his phone number. Ravi says that Kiran is just a servant and even if she is his friend, now that their family is coming from abroad for a visit, now they have no time for friends as there would be lots of parties and events.
