The BBC’s Sherlock returned for its fourth season this week, with a special episode that picked up where the show left off in January 2017. The first installment of the season, titled "the Six Thatchers", was broadcast on Netflix in many countries around the world over Christmas.So why is “The Six Thatchers” so important? Well, it was not originally designed to be part of Sherlock’s fourth season! The BBC has confirmed that it is actually an unaired pilot episode which will not be broadcast on TV. It's also worth noting that the episode comes at a time when viewers are eagerly anticipating this new series following two years off-air. “The Six Thatchers” was the first episode written for series four before any other scripts were commissioned. According to Steven Moffat, co-creator and writer of the episode, "the idea of setting a brand new Sherlock Holmes adventure in contemporary London was simply too tempting to resist".The original pilot for Sherlock's fourth season was designed to attract new viewers, but it did not follow the template for a standard episode. It featured a Scottish actor in the title role and a Japanese actress in a starring role. Sherlock's characterisation was also far less conventional. The story was also extremely dark and gritty, but the pilot only ended up being made into an episode which will never be broadcast.In the episode, John Watson visits the hospital where Sherlock is recovering from giving his life in order to see him, but is interrupted when Sherlock gives him a cryptic warning about Moriarty’s return to London. In this new world, however, Sherlock has been captured by Moriarty and locked away in an asylum for the criminally insane. It is all very intriguing, but what’s the truth? Was this original pilot really considered for broadcast in the UK at one point? Well, it turns out that it was indeed commissioned alongside the rest of season four. And when Moffat says that they decided to produce this “brilliant yet deeply odd episode” with a “wonderful actress in the lead role”, he was most likely referring to Louise Brealey's character, Molly Hooper. (Brealey plays Sherlock's assistant in the series.)Moffat has also stated that Sherlock himself is based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original version of the character. "The Six Thatchers" does contain several elements of the original “The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton”, with the episode thus mimicking the tone of one of Sherlock's earlier adventures in London. However, despite this, there are no direct references to any one Conan Doyle story. Although there were plans for "The Six Thatchers" to be broadcast by ITV in the UK in late 2016 (and possibly in 2017) - although this is unconfirmed - it was eventually passed over for broadcast by the BBC. The reason behind this has not been stated, but it could be because they didn't want to advertise it on their official programme list before its December release.
