He earned a B.S. degree in Geography and a M.A. and Ph.D degrees in Ecology from the University of Chile (UC), graduating summa cum laude in both programs, and he holds honorary doctorates from UC's School of Journalism and Mass Communications (1964) and from the University of Antofagasta (1994). He has published more than forty books on different aspects of nature, history, and geography. He is the only Latin American to have won the Iberoamerican Prize for Natural Sciences (1993) and the National Award for Nature Conservation (1995). Jaramillo is also one of Chile's best known journalists, having worked on several newspapers and magazines. He currently works as a writer substitute for La Tercera, a major Chilean newspaper. Jaramillo has also taught at UC's School of Journalism since 1984. He created the Fundacion Alvaro Jaramillo in 1990 to promote environmental awareness among Scouts in Chile. He has also served as an advisor to different companies, organizations, and governments on diverse environmental projects. Jaramillo is one of the founders of Project Conservation Chile, a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental education. He was also one of the original framers of the Santa Cruz Declaration on Environmental Conservation, signed by fourteen countries in Durban, South Africa in 2002.Jaramillo's first efforts focused on nature observation and natural history sketches. His first book, "Encuentros con la naturaleza" (Encounters with Nature), published in 1984, is a compilation of twenty-nine nature sketches. Throughout the eighties, Jaramillo wrote articles on the environment for Chilean newspapers and magazines. His first major work on birds was "Huellas de fauna y flora del sur de Chile" (Trace of Wildlife and Flora of South Chile), published in 1982. This book introduced readers to the different bird species found in the region between 25°S- 28°S latitude, which covers much of central and southern Chile.
