" Kaalia" was further dented by the Monday holiday as it collected around 1.80 as compared to Friday's collections of 3.10 crore nett and Saturday's 3.40 crore nett thus taking its first week total to 13.00-14. 00 crore nett. Kaalia opened to negative reviews from critics. Bollywood Hungama rated it 2 out of 5 saying "On the whole, Kaalia somehow fails to scare and ends up as a big bore."The film not only got negative comments from critics, but many even went on to compare the movie with Bhatt’s own creations. A lot of them were calling Kaalia a very poor and ‘slapstick’ attempt from Bhatt. The high expectations from people who have worked with Bhatt in the past have led to very disappointing reviews for the movie.

The director Vikram Bhatt has also made a short film based on the same story. It was called ‘Ek Prem Kaalia’. It was released on his YouTube channel on 23 May 2014. The short film is set in 80’s Delhi and has Sujoy Wankhede, Tia Bajpai, Avinash Sachdev, Umang Jain in pivotal roles.
