The game was developed by Spin Master's Backbone Entertainment division, who have also developed the similar Bakugan Battle Brawlers games for DS and Wii, which are based on the same television series. Bakugan Battle Brawlers Wildfly was developed by Incredible Technologies and published by Activision, instead of Backbone Entertainment. The game was released in North America on September 20, 2008 for Wii, with a release date of September 27, 2008 in Europe. The Wii version was well-received by critics, but received mixed reviews for its controls and lack of content. The entire game is available via download for Nintendo DS through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service.
FunctionalityThe game features playable characters from several different franchises, including "Bakugan" itself, "Disney's Uncle Scrooge", "Transformers", and the anime series "Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt". Users can also create their own created Brawlers using the Create a Fighter tool. The game also features several single player modes including, Hero Mode which pits the user against Scaredy-Sack Island, Scramble Mode (which allows users to choose between all unlocked Brawlers), and Battle Arena (which allows users to create their own custom created Brawlers) as well as four "Challenge Modes": Story 1 (Ready or Not), Story 2 (The Dark Tournament), Story 3 (The Gathering Storm) and Tournament Mode.All characters are based on popular fictional light novel characters from the Bakugan Battle Brawlers series.
On its release date, Bakugan Battle Brawlers received generally positive reviews from critics. Official Nintendo Magazine gave the game 94%, describing it as "a fine addition to the DS library." Nintendo Power praised the game for having "loads of modes and options" and for being very addictive. Nintendo Power also praised developer Backbone Entertainment for "incorporating fantastic elements from other popular franchises". IGN, however, gave the game 6/10, criticizing it for its controls, graphics, story line and lack of replay value.
