Aged singer-songwriter Jimi Hendrix is releasing a new album in just two weeks, but you won't have to wait until then to hear it. The musician's estate recently announced that they will be making their latest work available for free download on May 25th.The project, which has been in the works since 2013, will include 12 never-released songs chosen from over thirty hours of recordings Hendrix made in 1968 with producer Mike Shrieve. It's reported that there are no overdubs or additional instrumentation on the recordings and they they are faithful to the sound of 1968 when the soul was deeply rooted in funk and psychedelic music, according to guitar player John McDermott who also appears on the album. The album also features Hendrix collaborator Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles who toured the U.S. with Hendrix in 1969."We went into the studio without any direction or a big plan," Mike Shrieve recalled of their time working with Jimi Hendrix in 1968. "In fact, it was just the opposite -- we just let things happen."Besides includes a set of songs recorded by Jimi Hendrix and his band Gypsy Sun and Rainbows, a group that included singer-songwriter Allen Woody along with bass player Billy Cox, drummer Buddy Miles and keyboard player Mitch Mitchell . The songs feature a wide variety of the creative musical influences the creative musical talents of Hendrix brought to life, including soul music, funk and psychedelic rock. McDermott says -- "When Jimi was making those tracks in '68 he knew he was recording something special. He loved those songs and loved playing them. The band had a great time in the studio and you can really hear that when you listen to the album. It just came out of them in a way that was natural and real."The band recorded 15 tracks in three days at Record Plant Studios in New York City, including "Let Me Move You," which is being released as a single.The Jimi Hendrix Experience, to record their third album, was formed in 1967 by Hendrix, guitarist/singer Eric Clapton, bassist/singer Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell. In March of that year, the lineup recorded their first album, Are You Experienced. The record skyrocketed to number one on the charts and featured some of rock's most memorable songs including "Foxy Lady," "Fire," and the title track. After a two-year hiatus, Hendrix returned with his sophomore effort Axis: Bold as Love in December 1968, which would reach number three on the charts. Within a month of Axis' release, Hendrix began recording with Gypsy Sun and Rainbows -- a band put together by bassist Billy Cox (who also played with Hendrix in the early 1960s).
