In 1971, a movie called "The Vault" was being filmed in Los Angeles, about a man trapped alone in a vault. The film's director, a young Robert Zemeckis, was making a name for himself as an animator and visual effects technician working on films such as "Amazing Stories". He worked at Topcraft Studios doing special effects for films such as the 1968 Jackie Gleason comedy "What Price Hollywood?" and the 1969 Steve McQueen drama "The Thomas Crown Affair". In the summer of 1970 Zemeckis met Dean Tavoularis who was responsible for organizing films into films and commercials. Zemeckis already had interest in films but had no interest in directing films individually. The two started discussing films and started working on one together using any films that Zemeckis felt would be good to use. The first film that they made was "Cruel Shoes" about an anti-war activist who uses footage of the Vietnam War to raise money for the war effort.They named their production house Screen Films and convinced post-production companies, such as EMI Film Industries to distribute films under their new company. They hired Sound Effects Editor/Re-recording Mixer Jay Stockwell to use his creative abilities in association with Robert Zemeckis's artistic creative abilities. This creative strategy worked so well that it became the beginning of half of what is now ImageMovers Digital. They created "The Beta Test Project" in 1972, which was a short film that took place at a dull event where the only entertainment was the passing of time. The short went on to win many awards including being nominated for an Academy Award.

The film is also well known for being stolen by pair of young filmmakers who claimed to have made it themselves in order to get money for their project "Nadja". But after they stole the footage they started playing with it, editing it and adding things that didn't belong in the actual film, finally committing fraud by selling it as their own film when approached by potential buyers. The film was then dubbed into German by Detlev Buck and distributed in that country as "She Is My Woman". The story also has another twist; it is alleged that the final title "Nadja" was another alias of the director Zemeckis who actually directed the movie, but he never revealed this fact. The film is set in France during World War I. A novice pilot, known only as Captain Gallant (Christopher Plummer), is assigned with an older instructor (Robert Shaw). They are instructed to fly over German-occupied France before dawn next morning.
