The Sivaji movie, starring Rajinikanth in his 100th film, is about a man's journey to reclaim his property that has been seized by landlords. The story is set in 18th-century Madras. The protagonist prevailed against much odds to bring back the property to its rightful owner after generations of foreign occupation. Later on in the movie, Madras turns into Chennai and Sivaji's journey ends with him winning it back from its English conquerors. The movie was released on September 22nd 1999 and since then it has become an iconic Indian historical film with ardent fans all over India and abroad. The movie is based on the epic "Sivakamiyin Sabatham", a Tamil poem written in the late 18th century and "Chakravarthi Sri Raja Raja Cholan", an Indian history book written in the early 19th century. The film was released at a time when common man came to know about Sivaji, who was not just an Indian icon, but an icon throughout South East Asia for his achievements and contribution to India's freedom struggle. It also marked the role played by Chennai as a city that has played host to many prominent personalities. Sivaji stars Rajinikanth in the role of a common man, who fights against the evil. Rajinikanth's character has many similarities to the historical figure. The movie begins with Sivaji being born to Indian parents in Pannai nadu, an ancient Tamil country based on present day Southeast Asia. The kingdom is ruled by King Narpani Malik kizhavan, who does not have children of his own and has adopted Sivaji, an orphan child from distant lands. Hindu priests tell him he will have two sons but will also face danger from them. As he grows up, Sivaji is educated in the arts of military warfare. He attempts to capture the fort in Chidambaram but fails. He is then sent under the care of Kala Lava kumaar, who is an expert in warfare. Together they capture many forts and lands giving them to Sivaji's uncle, Appatanthu Mani Pillai. Appatanthu Mani Pillai sends him far away from Pannai nadu and gives him a wife who he does not truly love and an adopted son named Thaanaathi Pillai. This separation sparks the first conflict between Sivaji and Mani pillai. Later, Sivaji and his uncle fight with the Dutch and manage to free a land called Vandhiyathevan nadu. The elders predict that Sivaji will become powerful and his will be unbreakable. However, they also predict that he will lose everything he gains due to his sons betraying him. Furthermore, they predict that his enemy will be a woman.
