Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf was overthrown in October 2008 by the Pakistani Supreme Court. His resignation allowed Benazir Bhutto to re-assume her place as prime minister of the country, only to be assassinated only weeks later.Musharraf was born in Delhi, India, on August 11th 1943. At that time British controlled India and Pakistan was about two years old. His family moved back to Pakistan after his father passed away when he was only five. Both of his parents were teachers.Musharraf took an interest in military tactics at an early age. His father trained him in fencing, horseback riding, and judo. As he grew older he took an interest in studying military history. Musharraf later joined the Pakistan Military Academy, or PMA. He was the top student there and soon became interested in paragliding.Musharraf graduated from the PMA with a commission as a lieutenant in the Pakistan Army. He then completed his education at University of Punjab before entering the Command and Staff College Quetta in January 1971. Musharraf later received an M.A. in international relations from the University of Karachi, followed by a Ph.D. in international relations at LSE. Musharraf fought with the 2nd Battalion of the Pakistan Army during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 near the Sialkot sector with his company commander Lt-Col Ghani Khan Dogerani. He was wounded on January 8th and died two days later on January 10th at Ahmedpur East, now in India but then part of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (POK). Following his death, Musharraf was inducted into the Pakistani Army as a brigadier. He was promoted to major general on April 21st 1974, and to lieutenant-general on October 31st 1982. Musharraf took command of the 11th Infantry Division in September 1984. He went on to command the entire 3rd Corps at Rawalpindi in June 1987, eventually leading it back to Multan around September of the same year. Musharraf was appointed governor of KPK province in October 1988, where he remained until May 1989, when he was transferred out to head the Pakistan Army's Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). He held this position until May 1993, when he was promoted to Chief of General Staff of the Pakistan Army, a position he held until December 1994 when he was transferred to command the XXXIII Corps (the corps that had fought at Sialkot) in Lahore. During this time he also served as commander of the Joint Command during Operation Blue Star.On December 8th Pakistan got its act together to stop Sri Lanka from attacking it in Jaffna. On December 11th 1993 General Sharif (then Air Chief Marshal) Musharraf was tasked by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif with commanding Operation Silvertown which neutralized the Indian Air Force in Sri Lanka, thus ending the war in Sri Lanka.
