After some research I was able to do it atlast. Follow the following steps The problem is with download manager not gmail. I can't download or read Gmail attachments too, I have tried clearing cache, clearing app data, and even reinstalling from play store.. but I still can't get the Gmail app to behave.. the only way I have now is to use Gmail from chrome browser -- which is a slow archaic way!!
