Lee Isaac Chung ’s “Minari” casts a spell from its opening moments, a Terrence Malick-like evocation of human beings trying to stay in harmony with the natural world. As a family car travels through a green American landscape, the earth itself seems to be speaking to the characters, and through them, to us. It is a classic immigrant story with specific, often unique new details. A Korean American family headed by a father, Jacob ( Steven Yeun) and mother Monica (Yeri Han), came from Korea in the 1980s and spent time in California working as chicken sexers, separating baby chicks by gender. Now they have moved with their two American-born children, a serious and mature girl named Anne ( Noel Kate Cho) and a six-year-old named David (newcomer Alan S. Kim), hoping to start a 50-acre farm in a small Arkansas town. Culture clash is the unifying subject here, though not the only one. Chung, who waited to make this autobiographical drama until he had several acclaimed films under his belt, knows exactly the story that he wants to tell and how he wants to tell it. Monica and Jacob fight over their shared goals as a couple and their ambitions for their children. The tension of assimilation versus independence underscores every exchange, whether it’s intimate and private or connected to the larger community that they are tentatively getting to know. It’s clear that Jacob has bought into some version of "the American dream" and carries himself like a prototypical mid-20th-century white American farmer, complete with gimme cap, terse speech, breast pocket cigarette pack, and ambling gunfighter walk. Monica seems more torn, and it is obvious from seeing the two of them interact that she comes from a higher social class and is more comfortable in the cities. As the story goes on, we begin to wonder if she regrets having moved to America in the first place. Even though she’s game, it’s a tough road that never seems to get easier. Ordinary rituals become fresh and alive when a different frame is put around them, and this is the case in Chung’s film. The couple talks about whether to get a small farm in a community with a larger Korean American population or stick where they are and tough it out in relative isolation, a conversation many couples might have in a similar situation, here it is with all sorts of secondary challenges. What church do we go to? Should we go to church at all? How forward should we be in trying to make new friends with people who do not share our cultural heritage? These are problems that individuals raised in a monoculture don’t think about often, or at all. The movie loses tension at certain points, relying a bit too strongly on atmospheric nature shots and a haunting score that seems to be performed on a slightly out-of-tune upright piano, and sometimes punting conflicts down the timeline when the viewer may want a bit more examination of them at that moment. But Chung’s grip as a storyteller remains sure. There is a ring of truth to every moment and conversation. The best of these are imbued with a complexity and contradiction that suggests that there’s more to human interactions than whatever advice we were given as kids. A moment after church when young David is casually racially insulted by a young white boy who then immediately speaks to him as a friend, and invites him over to a sleepover, will ring true to anyone who has been on the receiving end of that type of behavior. Everyone in this movie is still learning the right way to behave, including the adults. The supporting characters are vividly drawn. The great American character actor Will Patton is superb as an evangelical Christian farmer who praises Jesus every minute and is glimpsed in one scene carrying a big wooden cross on his back as he walks along the country road. (Jacob asks if he wants a ride and he says no, he’s got this. ) But the best performance belongs to Yuh-Jung Youn as Soonja, Jacob’s grandmother, who is brought in from the old country to provide advice and childcare help. She is a live wire—a cosmopolitan who always speaks her mind and is at ease with profanity, practical joking, and making moral/ethical decisions that could have major repercussions without consulting Jacob or Monica. (When Monica puts a $100 bill in the church collection plate, presumably to make a big impression during their first visit, grandma deftly removes it. ) Chung has a knack for capturing those moments when people behave according to their own internal compass, in ways that may not make sense to an outside observer. And it’s impossible not to appreciate the deep understanding of human behavior, as well as the way that ordinary objects and situations acquire symbolic meaning when we think about them in relation to the characters. This is a lovely, unique film. Opening today, December 11th, for a limited release qualifying run before a wider release in 2021. Matt Zoller Seitz Matt Zoller Seitz is the Editor at Large of, TV critic for New York Magazine and, and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in criticism. Sundance: Lee Isaac Chung's fourth feature is a gentle, sweet, and yet staggeringly powerful story of assimilating into the American Dream. Told with the rugged tenderness of a Flannery O’Connor novel but aptly named for a resilient Korean herb that can grow wherever it’s planted, Lee Isaac Chung’s semi-autobiographical “ Minari ” is a raw and vividly remembered story of two simultaneous assimilations; it’s the story of a family assimilating into a country, but also the story of a man assimilating into his family. Jacob Yi ( Steven Yeun) and his wife Monica (“Sea Fog” star Yeri Han) emigrated from Korea together in the early ’70s, but — after nearly a decade of scraping by as chicken sexers in California — they arrive at the Arkansas trailer home he bought for their family in separate cars. Monica drives the kids: A stoic pre-teen girl named Anne (the natural and grounded Noel Cho), and a precocious seven-year-old boy named David (newcomer Alan S. Kim, delivering one of the most crucial and transcendently honest child performances since Jonathan Chang in “Yi Yi”). Jacob drives the truck, which is full of its own precious cargo. As he pulls up to the five-acre plot of disheveled Ozark farmland, stridently unaware that it defeated the last man who settled there, Jacob’s eyes glint with a hellbent kind of happiness; it’s the look of a man who’s about to literally plant his roots in foreign soil. He sees this raw earth as a Garden of Eden that’s waiting to be grown. A practical woman concerned about raising a son with a heart murmur in a town that’s an hour away from the nearest hospital, Monica isn’t quite convinced. How can they build a foundation for their family in a house on wheels? She glares at her husband in a way that implies a thousand unheard arguments, or the same argument a thousand times: “This isn’t what you promised. ” Gentle as the stream that flows through the Yi’s property, and yet powerful enough to reverberate for generations to come, Chung’s loving — and immensely lovable — immigrant drama interrogates the American Dream with the hard-edged hope of a family that needs to believe in something before they lose all faith in each other. Jacob is too proud to settle for somebody else’s terms; he’ll do anything to prove that he’s leading his family to the promised land, even if no one else shares his vision of success. As clenched and corporeal here as he was loose and elusive in “Burning, ” Yeun is spellbinding as the engine driving the Yis into a new home so unstable that a tornado could pick it up and fling it across the country (production designer Yong Ok Lee does a brilliant job of gradually filling the once empty trailer with a rich sense of personal history over the course of the film). By day, Jacob works at a coop where he assesses chicken genitals with the intensity of a Nascar pit crew. By night, he buries Korean produce in his farm, and wills the land into submission with some help from the eccentric Pentecostal next door (Will Patton). Jacob doesn’t appear overly interested in blending in — he and Monica speak to each other in Korean at home, and a tentative Sunday morning at the local church doesn’t seem to stick with him the way it does with his kids — but one way or another he’s going to make this country his own. Jacob is usually seen in a white tank top and a red hat with a cigarette pursed between his lips — he’s the distillation of a man, like the way a young boy might commit his dad to memory. To that end, “Minari” often feels like it might be David’s story most of all. Much like his dad, this ridiculously cute little kid has to assimilate on at least two different fronts. Born in America and seamlessly bilingual, David lives on Mountain Dew and loves to watch wrestling on TV. He wets his bed and gets into other puckish trouble, but most of the time he tries to keep things even-keeled, if only for the sake of the hole in his heart. But when Monica invites her widowed mother to come live with them, David can feel himself pulled in two directions at once for the first time in his life. A playful and vulgar old woman with an impish sense of humor, Soonja (Yuh-Jung Youn) is the coolest grandma a kid could ever ask for, but David is reflexively disgusted that she doesn’t line up with his Americanized understanding of what a grandma should be. She doesn’t bake. She “smells Korean. ” She’s his perfect foil, even if he isn’t yet perceptive enough to realize it. The many scenes between these two wonderful characters are warm and wistful in equal measure, as they ricochet from sage wisdom to the kind of hilarious gross-out humor that wouldn’t be out of place in a Farrelly brothers movie. Youn is nothing short of extraordinary in the role; from the start she personifies the elegant way that Chung keeps “Minari” suspended between naturalism and melodrama, and towards the end she triggers an incendiary climax that forges the Yi family’s entire future in a single moment of truth. From the opening notes of Emile Mosseri’s ethereal piano score to the way that Monica keeps tugging Jacob back to reality, Chung’s immaculate memory play is always poignantly in flux between shared recollections of the past and conflicting visions of the future. This beautiful film posits family as the ultimate journey, only to explore how difficult it can be to agree on a destination. Is Jacob trying to prove what’s possible for himself, or is he doing his best to build something for the next generation? Is there any way those two goals might be able to overlap before Monica has to pull the ripcord? If the finale registers as uncharacteristically intense for a movie that otherwise trades in quiet observations and expressive grace notes — a hole in the clouds at the end of a brutal stretch of farming; the Yi family arranging themselves across the trailer in a single wide shot that makes it feel like a home — “Minari” is held together by how it always feels like a daydream. At one point, eager for David to stop wetting his bed, Monica gives her son some advice. She tells him that the next time he goes to pee, he should stand at the toilet, pull open his cheeks, and ask himself: “Is this a dream? Is this a dream? ” We can only assume that David will outgrow that damp tendency one day, and yet — by the end of this unforgettable movie — dreams and reality have seldom been more indistinguishable from each other. Through Chung’s eyes, that’s precisely what makes them both seem possible. Grade: A “Minari” premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival in the U. S. Dramatic Competition. Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2021 Verified Purchase My parents immigrated to the US in the late 1960's and raised us in small mid-western towns in the 70's and 80's. We were basically the only Asians wherever we landed. My father preferred the 'wholesomeness' of small town life. We experienced innocent ignorance, awkward curiosity, exclusion and rarely, overt racism. I was never capable of explaining to my non-Asian friends (who were full of goodwill), how my life was so different than theirs. It was too much to explain. It was easier to assimilate in public, protect the privacy of my hyphenated existence, and let them say that I was 'just like them' (their way of saying 'you belong') but landed on me as 'we don't really see you'. Out of nowhere, 'Minari' is here and has unexpectedly opened a crevasse into my heart, exposing the very specific core of a Korean-American household that I I thought was too complicated to explain. It is so bittersweet for me to watch. There are many, many tiny details in this movie that will only be recognized by Korean-Americans of my generation. The director has left us secret notes everywhere. MINARI: The fact that this movie exists, that it is being universally lauded, that it was created with restraint and nuance (not a single cringe) is so shocking to me because it's a thing I never knew I was starving for. It's something I didn't think was possible. To think a thing could be made that opens a clear view into what it meant to come to this country with 'nothing', to work like hell and suffer, to assimilate and have kids that reject the 'homeland' - all while being an extremely tight-knit, isolated nuclear family who loves each other in a verbal and emotional language that is not typical for the average American. It opens my heart and reminds me of the void that's existed in me for so long. I never thought this window could open and expose this life with such dignity and respect. And to see it recognized, appreciated, awarded... to have something of my weird and seemingly inexplicable life celebrated is simply astonishing. Thank you to everyone who made this movie happen. And thank you to everyone who is interested enough to watch it. Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2021 Verified Purchase As a Korean American transplant, this movie was like a mirror image to my experience growing up in America in the 70s. The way the kids switch from Korean to American language, that was me. There was a lot more racism back then. This moved showed it in its subtlest form. Phenomenal cast. Superbly done. Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2021 Verified Purchase The buzz is true - award worthy performances abound in this film and it is an emotional roller coaster. Just when you think you’ve wrapped your head around the family’s story, they give you an even deeper box to unpack.. Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2021 Verified Purchase The film is much more than a representation of Asian Americans, though that by itself and how powerfully their story is presented makes this a movie that is more relevant now than ever. What will stay with you is its message about the resilience of family and what matters most in life. The frames of life on Arkansas farmland are beautiful and it's lead by powerful performances by all of the main cast. This is a necessary movie to understand that regardless of all our differences, the bond of family is something that we can all relate to. one of the best films i have seen in a while The story, performances, characters, cinematography, music, set and costume design. It's hard to think of an aspect I didn't like about this film. I don't usually get moved by movies but this one made me cry real tears. There are also funny and heart-warming scenes sprinkled throughout. The movie is dramatic but never unbelievable. I feel like I really got to know this kid's world through his eyes, and I feel like I just learned an important life lesson. One of the best films I've seen this year. I wish it was included free on Prime, but I'm glad I paid for it! Beautiful, heartwarming film for the whole family to enjoy! Familiar, nostalgic, immigrant and "American" story, universal. Beautiful storytelling.
