Hocus Pocus is one of those films that I grew up watching every year, so I will always have a special place for it in my heart. This film has many cheesy quirks and clichés, but has huge nostalgic value. With an extremely fast pace, this film never gets boring, having a lot of guilty pleasure moments. Even though the plot is simple, and spread out pretty thin, there is still a lot of fun to be had. Hocus Pocus was made for the younger kids, having this charming edge to indulge in.
Even though this film is enjoyable, there is still a lot that could be worked on. Kenny Ortega seemed to have a tough time setting and balancing the tones, having things be lighthearted at one moment, then gets unusually dark and mature, and it just doesn't seem to flow right.
The script wasn't really the strongest, having really weak dialogue, while missing more than enough times with the jokes. The script had it's enjoyable moments nevertheless, but it came off too silly at times, not holding much weight at all. If Ortega balanced out the tones, the script would've followed, and would've beefed this film up a bit.
The characters had a few high moments, but also more than a few not so good moments, due to the screenwriters having a difficult time fleshing out these poorly written characters. The three children were pretty bland, and wooden, while having a real simple structure, and very little characterization. They came off completely stereotypical, and forgettable, while being obnoxious at times. The three witches is what carried the entire film, bringing a lot of charm, and humor to the film. My favorite character of the whole film, is the black cat, Thackery Binx! He brings a lot of subtle humor to the film, while surprisingly having a few witty moments. The creative team tried too hard to incorporate too many characters for entertainment purposes, but it left everyone underdeveloped, and some soley used for a plot device.
Even though Hocus Pocus doesn't hold up all that well, I will forever watch this film, once a year, because of the joy it brings to me, and everyone that watches it.
