Carnet de Voyage is essentially an illustrated travel diary of Thompson's time in France and parts of the Middle East. The style is unconventional (compared to what you see in most mainstream comics) and is refreshing. Carnet de Voyage began as Thompson’s diary of his travel experiences on a European book tour. Throughout the book, Thompson makes occasional references to being a “simple Wisconsin country bumpkin” (p. 22), and this fact alone might have made the international book tour a special experience for the cartoonist, who currently lives in Oregon. Carnet de Voyage is a gorgeous sketchbook diary of Craig's travels as he finds intellectual and spiritual stimulation amidst the day-to-day work of being an author. From wandering around Paris and Barcelona between events, to navigating markets in Fez and fleeing tourist traps in Marrakesh, we see glimpses of each place, rendered in Thompson’s exquisite ink line.
