On Lansdown Hill, near Bath, England, a battle between Roundheads and Cavaliers that took place over years ago is annually reenacted. Two of the reenactors discover a skeleton that is female, headless, and only about twenty years old. One of them, a professor who played a Cavalier, is later found murdered. Skeleton Hill, written by Peter Lovesey, is the first Peter Diamond novel I have read, but it won't be the last. I was unfamiliar with Lovesey's work until this book was presented by my book club as a suggested read. I was entertained from the first page. Skeleton Hill is superb, one of his best books to date. Peter Diamond is as acerbic and single minded as ever, trying to find the keys to two murders, linked by their location but separated by 20 years. The dual murders are investigated simultaneously and we are led to believe they may have been made by the same killer.
