The history of Solomon in Arabic writings is complex, and unpack ing this history and its significance in and impact on the development of a culture is beyond the ability of one individual scholar, but would rather require a multi- and interdisciplinary collaborative project that brings together scholars of Judaism, Christianity and Islam from the fields of religious studies, history, art history, archaeology, liter- ature and comparative literature, and cultural studies, to name but a few.

What I offer below is a modest attempt at think ing through a number of theoretical issues relevant to literary studies. I will look closely at the manifestation of Muslim Solomon in a body of judi- ciously, though imperfectly, selected works from Arabic writings and raise, rather than answer, questions with regard to reading practices or interpretive processes in Arabic and Islamic studies.

What gives a text its unique fabric within the framework, ideology and structure of the genre to which it belongs? I begin with adab, then look at historical and exegetical writings, and end with storytelling. Solomon in adab: Wise Judge and Benevolent King Adab is perhaps one of the least useful genre designations and its definition is notoriously impossible to pin down. It is used to desig- nate vaguely an immensely diverse body of premodern writings in Arabic studies.

Muslim Ibn Qutayba d. He is, of course, given the ability by God, for God is the one who can give him the knowledge of the languages of,21 and the power over, the angels, demons and genies,22 who built his palace in Palmyra,23 and over the animals and birds,24 and the wind,25 all of which form part of his formidable conquering army. As a result, Solomon is able to avoid tramping on the ant kingdom,27 and to mobilise the hoopoe bird to lead him to water,28 and, more importantly, to bring him news of the Queen of Sheba so that he could eventually guide his army to her kingdom.

Even if the living non-human beings know instinctively to obey God, reason puts the quality of human faith above that of non- human obedience. The Dahriyya did challenge the Muslims on the issue of prophecy. If Solomon was a prophet and had mastery of the universe, they asked, why did he need the hoopoe to guide him to water and lead him to Sheba? The reply was, of course, that God in His wisdom had distributed knowledge among his creatures in such a way that the message that only God is perfect would be imparted.

Solomon himself is now not only the object of envy and adulation but also of debate. When her first husband returns, she has already given birth to a child [from her second husband]. The first husband denounces this child and the second claims him.

However, they both accuse her of adultery, or one of them, the one who denounces her, accuses her of adultery. What is your answer to this question? Why do you not ask me about matters on which scholars disagree? Here, as a prophet, he must be a cut above other human beings.

Paradoxically, as a model figure of power, he must also conduct himself in such a way as to accept challenges when he is in the wrong. May God give him power. I have learned of something you did not know [Q: ]. I know better than the hoopoe and Solomon is more knowledgeable than the judge. In this case, Solomon comprehended what David had not. Abd al-Malik r. If [demolishing it] was the right thing to do, then your father had erred, but if it was the wrong thing to do, then you had disobeyed your father.

A herd of sheep had entered a vine grove and eaten a tree bare. The owner of the grove came to David seeking compensation from the sheep owner. David believed that the sheep owner should pay the vine grower the price of the tree. Solomon disagreed. He judged that the two owners should exchange their properties until the day that the vine grove was restored to its former state; that way, while the sheep owner repaired the vine grove, the vine grower could benefit from the sheep shearling and milk.

Let ilm be your wealth and adab your adornment. It is this mare that went on to become the mother of a famous Arabian mare. Solomon the wise judge and benevolent king, as master of the universe and conquering hero, offers many imitable qualities. Statecraft or kingship, as seen through the prism of these two compendia, requires in addition the collaboration and support of officers of the court and advisors to the king, and the ideal conduct of these is explored and promoted at the same time and with equal rigour.

Solomon in qis. No library of the contemporary occult student or practicing magician is complete without this tome. It remains a standard of esoteric lore by which others are measured. This edition includes a new foreword by noted esoteric scholar Joseph Peterson.

Why are sex and jewelry, particularly rings, so often connected? Why do rings continually appear in stories about marriage and adultery, love and betrayal, loss and recovery, identity and masquerade?

What is the mythology that makes finger rings symbols of true or, as the case may be, untrue love? The cross-cultural distribution of the mythology of sexual rings is impressive--from ancient India and Greece through the Arab world to Shakespeare, Marie Antoinette, Wagner, nineteenth-century novels, Hollywood, and the De Beers advertising campaign that gave us the expression, "A Diamond is Forever.

Herein lie signet rings, betrothal rings, and magic rings of invisibility or memory. The stories are linked by a common set of meanings, such as love symbolized by the circular and unbroken shape of the ring: infinite, constant, eternal--a meaning that the stories often prove tragically false.

While most of the rings in the stories originally belonged to men, or were given to women by men, Wendy Doniger shows that it is the women who are important in these stories, as they are the ones who put the jewelry to work in the plots.
