How to download mods interraria

I have been trying to use the T mod loader for quite some time now the reason it wont allow me to do it is because its on a "shared game" type of thing and the person who gave me this doesn't play the terraria and also no longer even uses steam so he gave me the terraria and now I technically own it but like I said its a "shared system type of thing" so I can not use T mod loader because it strangely doesn't work. So if anyone knows how to get mods without the T mod loader please tell me.
