As for down in the Notification Area, I did get a notification that windows failed to install the device's driver whenever I plug it in. So the hardware is seeing the scanner, which means John is correct that the driver did not install.

Try just deleting those devices out of the device manager and then refreshing and see if you can get to prompt you for where the driver is.

You could also try right clicking the device and trying the troubleshoot option. If all that fails, do a system restore back to before you installed anything or plugged anything in.

For future reference, for USB devices, you almost always install the software first. You don't have to un-install. Just re-install with the scanner detached. Reboot when done and plug the scanner in. I remember always installing software prior to plug-in but I guess I just got spoiled by newer plug-n-play devices recently.
