13 February 2012. Take Rocky (1976) and a plucky boy who appears to have more maturity or is more suited (as the script calls for) being the father of the typical movie father who abandoned his son, lost his custody of his son and who apparently never grew up (for most of the movie anyway.
The son's character is a bit grating at times and takes the dominate role while his father almost appears to be witless and can't avoid being child (no wonder his wife divorced him. Unlike strong children, seemingly all girl leads such as in Where the Lilies Bloom (1971) Winter's Bones (2010) Fly Away Home (1996) The Secret of Roan Inish (1995) Little Miss Sunshine (2006) or for a strong boy role Hugo (2011) or Incredibly Loud and Extremely Close (2011) Dakota Goyo comes off cocky and full of himself from the movie script. One strong child male protagonist with a more balanced adult-child relationship can be found in The Cidar House Rules (1999. While such a character might delight to young kids, such enterprising in your face kids seem more like a daunting force for humiliation and embarrassment for adults, not of a parenting role model for parents to experience entertainment. Another young brash and sometimes uppity child character was found in the remake of True Grit (2010) though many found the movie among the best of the year and Winter Bones (2010) both young female leads.
The best movies that seem to have children who are able to survive and prosper because they need to are reflected in such movies as The Secret Garden (1993) the animated Coraline (2009) or when children get to just explore and interact among themselves in both a childlike or adult way as in Stand By Me (1986) Holes (2003) or The Chronicles of Naria: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (2005) and more recently Super 8 (2011. Perhaps among the closest child-relational parallel movie to Real Steel may be the sci-fi children drama A Wrinkle In Time (2002) that has an nice balance of creativity, child-adult thinking mix and humor and drama and some of the best of young adult movies Whale Rider (2002) or The Lovely Bones (2009) The Tree of Life (2011) even the animated Incredibles (2004) or Spirited Away (2001.
Another underdeveloped theme of this movie was the wasted potential the robotic-human interface dynamic which could have been used to an incredible affect with an almost A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) mystic that was overlooked. Even today, the animated standard of motion capture has already established that the technology exists even today to replicate what is being presented as come futurist sports game (which if the audience interest and investors were willing could become reality today. To its credit, Real Steel avoids the overly dramatic stereotypical divorced wife hysteria though more could have been developed to even make these scenes more potent. Too little was shown in the way of Atom's rise through the ranks and then the sudden the title fight ultimatum and its resolution seemed overly simple and the antagonist too unnecessarily two-dimensional.
The net result is another interesting but not particularly innovative nor creative movie that uses by the numbers' plot points and a boy character and using a robotic theme that could have generated a new level of experience.
