All of the people in the movie feel like actual humans with actual relationships. While the situations are extreme, their reactions all feel genuine. The three girls who make the pact actually feel like 3 girls who have been friends their whole lives, and the 3 parents actually feel like 3 parents with some degree of friendship but also a bit of a past. I liked how the parents were concerned around their kids but also unfiltered around each other, and I felt everyone reactions to the situations were real.

And without getting into spoilers, while losing their virginity is the ultimate goal of the night for the girls and the parents ultimate goal is stopping it, the movie does go an interesting direction with the final resolution involving all parties that actually felt modern and real.

Whereas something like American Pie feels like a male teenage fantasy of this sort of situation, Blockers actually feels like how it might actually play out with a few exaggerated situations, and I actually really respect the film for that. But is the film funny? I chuckled a few times, there were consistent smiles, and I enjoyed the journey. I guess there were some laughs, but as far as comedies go the laughs were actually pretty low. I'm ultimately giving Blockers a moderately positive rating because I really do respect what it was trying to do, and I did enjoy the experience overall with a wonderful cast to be around.

This time the chemistry of the parents is the key here, and casting against type is what works very well, Cena is impressive with the comedy.

Cena is clever with the material, he is growing into one of the better crossovers, like The Rock. The young cast are very funny and play well together, the only issue is we have all seen teen comedies like this before and to be different you really need to play with the narrative to stand out. If you pick this up for anything, let it be their track record. Instead of clamoring for major action pieces, Cena has gone the route of comedy more often than not. It suits him well. While his role as overbearing sports father is a little one dimensional, he plays the part with aplomb despite not having much range.

Mann is always the rock-solid member of the cast in smaller films like this, and she rises again to the motherly role among some fresh, young actors from Cena to the kids they cast. Ike Barinholtz is mostly here for slapstick, but he nestles into his role quite easily having also been a veteran in comedy movies like this. While these three certainly are the bulk of why you see this movie, the three teens don't quite get to be seen enough to be the stars.

Blockers is clearly built to have the adults as the main characters. The plot is pretty straightforward. Teenagers want to have sex on prom night and parents try to stop them once they learn of the plan. I would classify this as a soft comedy with sparks of smartness; it really touches on a myriad of different familial styles like single mothers, single fathers, and a traditional nuclear family.

With some wisps of laugh-out-loud humor, a few goofy cameos, and a trio you can back from the start, Blockers is an enjoyable enough Sunday Funday film. It will leave you wondering what could have been had someone with more experience behind the pages and camera had made this film, but the skeleton is there.
