Excellent practical guide to fundamental theoretical concepts By Kendall Burks As a multi-instrumentalist, composer, graduated music major and current music teacher, I've spent many years studying music theory and both thinking about how and experimenting with ways to communicate about it in a way that is both clear and practically useful.
This is an incredibly difficult task to say the least, but with this book, Ross Trottier has succeeded in taking some massive strides on that front. I would certainly recommend this book to the beginning student seeking to build a solid foundation of musical understanding, as well as to the more advanced student seeking to gain a fresh and clear perspective on topics they are already familiar with, but may have struggled to understand.
The author does a good job of crafting clear explanations, and sequencing those explanations so that they build upon each other in a way that makes the topic seem as easy as he promises it is. His general approach and philosophy facilitates this, which emphasizes clear understanding of the most essential foundations and the relationship of those to music as it can be easily practiced by the reader. This book is not a stylistic manual, but rather a concise explanation of principals and concepts that govern a multitude of styles.
This is the explicit aim of the author, and it is to his credit given the polystylistic and virtually boundary-less musical world we inhabit today. On a more specific level, I have found the author's innovative diagram of the tonal map, which is a central feature of his teaching method, to be a simple and elegant, yet powerful method for teaching the harmonic implications of melody and the basic principal of voice leading.
It's quite a powerful tool! I am 35 yrs old and thought that i wanted to learn more in music and am very greatful that this information is available for use and very simple understandings.
Thank you Mr.
