I will set the scene by saying that we not very long ago took ownership of a little dog, a cross between a pug and a border terrier, and he is a little terror at times. Money doesn't exactly grow on trees and the local rates for dog training is way over our heads at the moment.

I am trying to train Bailey myself and this little book was perfect and I am hoping that it works. The dog training techniques are simple but sound pretty impressive.
I started the new training programme today and Bailey did very well, although I am under no illusions that it could take around 7 months or over to change him into a new dog! I think if I can train Bailey, I can train any dog so maybe there will be a new hobby there for me. I have already purchased another training book from my local library.
Just let me take this opportunity to wish everyone who has read any of my blog posts a very Merry Christmas and fabulous new year. It has been such an amazing experience to do this challenge and I have way outdone my expectations. I am hoping to post a wrap up post in the next few days and I look forward to another year of '52 books in a year'.
I am hoping to post some of my own short stories too to make it a little bit more interesting or not as the case may be! Thanks to Mrs Henry for buying me the Kindle and it has now become my second wife! A quick read filled with some great, mostly practical, information.
Some of the methods require recruiting the help of some other dog owners which may be difficult to do. Great information none the less. Will see how effective it is in a 4 - 6 month timeframe. Sep 08, Dixie rated it it was amazing Shelves: animals-dogs , non-fiction. This booklet has very good advice and is a quick read. I am guilty of being one of the people who goes from training in an easy situation to trying to train in a very difficult situation without taking the necessary slow steps in between.
Previously we used an Easy Walk harness and it barely did anything while walking the largest dog. He is a terrible leash lunger. The Gentle Leader has proven to b This booklet has very good advice and is a quick read. The Gentle Leader has proven to be an almost instant deterrent to his lunging.
I am trying to take it slow and not walk him by a strange dog until we have perfected the "Watch" command that McConnell writes about in this booklet. I have hope that a combination of the Gentle Leader and the "Watch" command will prove successful in conquering leash aggression.
Jan 09, Marnie rated it really liked it. This is the second book I've read from this author and I am consistently impressed. This is a small book and it's focused primarily on reactivity while on leash which is a big problem for our new little rescue. As with Feeling Outnumbered? McConnell uses her positive reinforcement not only as a method for teaching your dog but also as a means of encouraging the book's readers. I haven't yet tried her methods but they are outlined in such simple way, with plenty of tips and tricks for avoiding failure and dealing with the unexpected, that I feel confident I can help my little pup.
I will definitely buy more books from this author. Feb 23, Steve rated it really liked it. This is a slender booklet with a specific purpose it meets well. McConnell provides easy-to-implement strategies with gentle reasoning behind them. Her focus is on changing undesirable behaviors by giving the dog an alternative, one which is taught using positive reinforcement and incremental learning. I found the ideas here very beneficial for my Feisty Fido, Sydney.
Feisty Fido meets its stated purpose well and in ways that are helpful to both the dog and his or her human. Four stars is only a This is a slender booklet with a specific purpose it meets well. Four stars is only about the limited scope — by design to be sure — not of any criticism of the book or author. If you have a Feisty Fido, by all means read this. I have a three year old rescue dog who is the sweetest girl indoors. Unfortunately, the moment we hit the street, it's game on. Found in the woods, my dog routinely used these aggressive behaviors to protect herself. They have persisted now that she's safe, and I was worried she would always be like this.
But enter this book I had no idea what to call it b I have a three year old rescue dog who is the sweetest girl indoors. I had no idea what to call it before, but if leash aggression is something your dog is struggling with, then you simply need this book.

Dec 16, Mickles rated it really liked it Shelves: animals-and-nature , book-riot-read-harder , science. The tips here are really clear and helpful for anyone with a leash reactive dog. Angus definitely is, and while Jakey wasn't when we adopted him, walking them together has allowed some of Angus's reactivity to rub off on him.
I do wish there were some photos, which sounds silly, but with training I'd really like a visual. I'll be employing some of these, but will likely use YouTube videos to supplement and help me understand a bit better.
