My solution, eventually, was to download itunes onto a PC, download the audiobook in itunes, right-click on the title and choose "Show in Windows Explorer".

This locates the audio file. Apple tell you the only way to view it on your iphone is to upload it to icloud, which is of course nonsense, it's a pdf, you can upload it wherever you want to, or email it to yourself. Posted on Jan 18, AM. Page content loaded.
