Windows 10 sorts downloads by date

2021.12.20 17:29

You can actually see it in action if you open the Downloads folder after installing or upgrading to Windows 10 v In theory, this makes it easy to find the recently downloaded files. However, the Date Modified grouping makes the files appear more cluttered. Moreover, finding files can be a bit harder, at least for me, if they are not recently downloaded.

For example, I generally like to sort files in the downloads folder by their file types. When the files are grouped by date, even though the files are sorted by types, they are still grouped by dates. The easiest way to fix the issue is to ungroup the files by deselecting the Date Modified option.

First, open the File Explorer and go the Downloads folder. If you later realize that this sort of grouping was good for the Downloads folder, or you prefer to use it for different folders, the option is right there. Microsoft might have just intended for this behavior to change after the update in which case, it needs to not make annoying changes like this. Your email address will not be published. Home Windows. Get daily tips in your inbox Newsletter. Posted 24 April - AM Hey guys, I downloaded some file off the net on two days [Friday and yesterday] all into one folder.

Posted 24 April - AM Why are you not using the "date modified" column for sort order that shows up in File Explorer by default. Posted 24 April - AM When you add new columns to the Explorer window, they will be added to the right as shown by the green arrow in the screenshot below. Edited by Agouti, 24 April - AM. Posted 24 April - AM mystic Posted 24 April - AM Please see attached screenshot, I am not seeing a 'date modified ' option in explorer.

Posted 24 April - AM Well, you were not explicit about being in music folders, which have different display defaults. Posted 24 April - AM let me go in slomo here, bear with me please, this is what I am seeing when I right click on the 'title' in the header, please advise me from there?

Posted 24 April - AM mystic12, it's not your doing that the folder is showing these columns. Posted 24 April - AM Yes, and you see blue checkboxes, checked, next to each and every column that's shown in your header row with the exception of "Name", which must be shown.

You will now have "Date Modified" showing where "Date Received" had been. Posted 24 April - AM The point I was trying to make is Windows automatically "optimizes" the folder based on the type of files in it.

Posted 24 April - AM Ok but not seeing how to get to that 'download properties' box to select the General option? Posted 24 April - AM Right-click on the folder. Select Properties. Click the Customize tab. Click in the box under Optimize this folder for: Select General Items. Reply to quoted posts Clear.
