Helpdesk Maintenance V 1 0. The swirling cyclone of gas dissipated slowly, as she heard Nat join in over the comms.
She seemed to be struggling, and Wanda was about to ask if she needed help, when she heard more gunfire from the back of the building. Running around to the front of the building, trying to avoid where she had released the gas, Wanda took to the air, but immediately came to a halt, floating ten feet up. The streets surrounding the Disease Centre were getting crazy. Which way had they gone?
She heard Sam say over comms that they were headed for a small market area, but everything was still too built up for her to see it. The babble of voices, most of them alarmed and slightly shrieking, was jarring. She strained her mind, trying to sift through the thousands upon thousands of thoughts, and finally she caught,.
Wanda flew straight towards him, doing her best to block out the senseless babble around her, trying to find the market place.
She found it; small, yellow, dusty, full of screaming people running in every direction. There was a man on his knees in front of him, and he seemed to be speaking. Wanda landed behind Steve, prepared to throw up some shields to protect the civilians when the man moved his hand up and pressed his finger down on a small black cylinder.
She threw her arms up, shields out to catch him, retracting her mind as quickly as she could, and the explosion he triggered nearly caused her control to slip instantly. The fiery force of the blast was beating against her shields, pressure on all sides, demanding to be let out. Through her concentration, she caught one horrified glance from Steve. There were people, civilians, Steve, down here. Up had worked for the gas, and in the air, nobody would get hit.
Get him away, get him out, get him up. With a great lurch, she lifted him, trying to send him high, out of range, out of sight if she could. She could fly now, she could fly. She just needed to get up there, to keep as close as she could get, and it would…be…. The pressure was too much, it was everything she could do to keep it contained and she…was…slipping. She fell to her knees as glass, paper and soot fell to the ground, as sirens began to wail and people started screaming, as Steve, Sam and Nat ran forward to help, and she stayed there for a very long time.
Wanda barely felt it. She was deep inside herself, reliving the moment of the explosion over and over and over. Could have been faster. Should have been faster. Could have lifted him further away. Could have lifted him at an angle. Should have lifted him at an angle. Should have held everything in until the man had burned up and the fire ball lost its power and momentum. It might have taken a long time, but she could have held it all in until it collapsed on itself.
She should have fucking tried. There were kids…. Nobody said anything, during the flight or when they touched down. Wanda kept her head down, focussing on putting one foot in front of the other. When she looked up again, she was in her room, and the door was shut behind her. The grey fog inside her brain threatened to smother her.
When she came out of the shower, her fingers pruning, the sun was just starting to peep over the horizon. She threw on some pyjamas and lay down on top of the bed and tried to focus on her breathing. She flirted with sleep, but every time she nearly went under, the explosion rang in her ears again. When the sunlight had stretched across her floor and was halfway up the wall, there was a knock at the door. Not Vision, not the right sound or weight. Maybe if she just stayed here, whoever it was would go away.
Another knock, this one just a little bit more forceful. Wanda let out a deep, long sigh, but forced herself upright. Natasha was on the other side of the door, concern creasing her brow. Wanda let herself be led down to the kitchen area, which was suspiciously empty. She raised an eyebrow at Nat, who raised one right back,.
Still unwilling to speak, Wanda collapsed into a chair at the table and rested her head in her hands. Finally, a plate of scrambled eggs, a few rashers of bacon and two slices of toast were pushed in front of her, along with a glass of orange juice. She ate mechanically, barely tasting anything, the chewing noises loud in the silence of the kitchen. It was comforting in its own way, but the guilt and grief still ate at her, the smoke still an after taste in her mouth.
And it did happen. The only thing any of us can do now is to take what we did wrong and remember it. Brand it into your mind. And make sure that it never happens again, in the future. She wanted to drop the plate, crumple to the floor and sob. She wanted to turn back time too, make all of it disappear.
Instead she held herself stoic, trying not to sway, as Nat patted her arm,. Every time. Wanda swallowed thickly and nodded. She dropped the plate with a louder clang than she meant to and stalked back upstairs. Finally, in a moment of self-hatred, she turned on the news. Mostly though, they were just blaming her. Five minutes later, Steve showed up at her door, turning the TV off with a look of sympathy on his face.
She hated him for it, just a little. Was she justifying turning on the TV? Or disagree? Wave his hands and make it all go away? Her heart fluttered with something like hope, but she squashed it down. I should have clocked that bomb vest, before you had to intervene. Steve shook his head, then sat down next to her on the bed.
He sighed heavily, and his shoulders caved inwards, as though carrying a heavy burden,. She saw the weight of it in his eyes, felt herself reflected back.
For a split second, Wanda was there again, in a hot dusty marketplace in Lagos, smelling the smoke, hearing the screams and the sirens, feeling the heat and the horror. She gritted her teeth and tried not to cry. But how? She wanted to scream, How do you learn to live with this? What right do we, do I, have to keep going after I let those people down?
When people died because of me? How do I live with this? Swallowing tightly, she managed a half smile and a nod. He looked unconvinced, but left with a hand clap on her shoulder and a nod back at her. Wanda sat for a moment, frozen in indecision. A twisted, pinched part of her mind wanted to shut the door and turn on the TV again, let the self-hatred, guilt and grief swallow her whole and drag her down.
Her hand twitched towards the remote, unconsciously. Her shoulders unclenched, her stomach stopped roiling, and she felt her head clear, just a little bit. She kept breathing until she felt herself sway on the edge of sleep, then opened her eyes. Her gaze landed on her dresser drawer. She got up and walked to her dresser. Her hand clenched and unclenched, once, twice, before she finally opened the drawer and took out the notebook and pretty coloured pens inside.
