Excluding some minor gameplay issues as small distractions, GGX will keep you hungry for more, as it throws some of the best graphics seen in 2D fighting in with well balanced fighters and new innovations that set it apart from the rest.

Guilty Gear X offers four different modes of play: arcade, vs. Most of the different modes of play are fairly routine, functioning like the majority of 2D fighters with only a few points worth mentioning.

When in the survival mode, for instance, you can build up experience points as you battle opponents, giving you the opportunity to beat the game once your level reaches Although not overly exciting, it does add a different dimension to the game other than simply beating it through the arcade mode.

In addition to the different modes, there is also an extensive options menu you may want to visit before starting. In it, you can adjust various settings ranging from game options to screen adjustments to controller settings. There are some options that were unexpected, helping the gameplay quite a bit. For instance, there is a short cut option that allows you to skip the cut-scenes in between matches to move the game along and also a medal mode where medals are awarded for score.

The question now becomes how does the game hold up when actually playing? Well, since spending years playing Capcom 2D fighting games and using them as a benchmark, Guilty Gear X easily holds its own. My preferred way of playing this is with headphones on and the music up loud and the sound effects about halfway.

The soundtrack is so good that it is a firm favorite of mine when I am at the gym as it really does pump me up. There is a decent enough range of characters here with many of our returning favorites and some fun new ones. My favorite one is Bedman who has one of the strangest character designs and personalities of any fighting game character I have seen. What I really like about the roster in Guilty Gear Xrd is that no two characters ever feel the same.

It is not the largest roster in a fighting game, but more than enough to keep you happy. One of the things that throws some people off about this series is just how complex it is. This is not a game you can just jump into and start mashing buttons like a maniac.

There is a lot of things to learn here and thankfully the game has an excellent tutorial that teaches you the basics.

I get the impression that they felt some people would be playing this as their first ever Guilty Gear game. The real star in terms of game modes in Guilty Gear Xrd is the story mode. This is amazing and plays out like an anime movie where you play as certain characters for certain sections. It is very, very well done and something I enjoyed immensely.

I would say that as far as fighting game stories go, it is only second to the recent Mortal Kombat games. Then we have the gameplay.

Guilty Gear X is unique, to say the least. The new gameplay features introduced are interesting, and are a nice change of pace. First, you can build up your special gauge simply by moving forward.

While that's nice, you actually lose your gauge if you don't make an advance. Next, there's the Roman Cancel. For the cost of half of the special gauge, you can press three buttons to cancel the recovery of most attacks, even after collision detection.

This can lead to some very over-the-top combos. Yes, you heard right. It is possible to kill the opponent with a single attack. Thankfully, these usually only work against the most foolish opponents. Overall, Guilty Gear X is a very impressive game.

I wouldn't say it beats out Mark of the Wolves or Street Fighter 3: Third Strike , but it's easily worth a look, especially since good fighting games for PC are few and far between.
