The nighttime scenes are easier to see - the 35 ANN. Edition is very dark and overstaurates these scenes with the color blue, making it look like a more modern film. This older transfer has caught some criticism for having too much green in the outside scenes - though this is truer to the look of the original film, it isn't appropriate for a movie that takes place in autumn. It's also true that this edition doesn't have as many extras, but the commentary track with Carpenter, Debra Hill, and Jamie Lee Curtis is one of the best I've ever heard and the 45 minute making of is also surprisingly solid. When I bought this edition, the 35th Ann. edition cost twice as much, so I feel I made the right choice. The gloss is very reflective, and although it shows fingerprints, it cleans off easily. The actual case is a standard quality Blu-ray case. Discs: The artwork from the 35th anniversary was used on both discs. Picture quality: I much prefer this addition to the 35th. That transfer seemed to make the night scenes way too dark and tinted blue. For this 40th anniversary, all of the black colors are sharp and the dark sequences are well balanced with their color. The day scenes are less green tinted than before, making it seem more like autumn than the summer in which it was actually filmed. The grain is still evident in some shots, but it's hardly a distraction for me. Audio: The Dolby Digital 5. 1 and uncompressed PCM 5. 1 are good, but I'm so glad it gives you the option to hear the original mono. It truly makes John Carpenter's score pop and sound better than ever. Overall: Whether or not you already own this movie, I personally find this to be the best restored version. Quite enjoyed the movie as a whole, however there were a few scenes that were completely irrelevant. The father getting peanut butter on his penis was bizarre.
But my main problem was with the end, very anticlimactic. I suppose it leaves it open for another, Micheal is obviously not dead, and the granddaughter with the knife was intriguing.
