How tall is south point hawaii
Photo courtesy of Les Williams. Hold on to your hats because the gusty winds that sweep across the coastal plains are unrelenting. As you drive down the narrow mile road through open ranch land to the point, you pass rows of giant electricity-producing windmills, powered by these blustery winds that the area is known for. From here, you can gaze out at the endless Pacific Ocean. Photo courtesy of Steve Dunleavy. Locals will attest that Ka Lae is an excellent fishing spot; however, swimming here is not advised due to the steep, rocky cliffs approximately 40 feet high , deep waters and dangerous currents. It is named after a Hawaiian chief whose fate was a watery grave at this very spot. Green Sand Beach is named for the green volcanic olivine crystals that make up a large percentage of the sand here.
Not easily accessible, a five-mile round trip walk or 4-wheel-drive vehicle is the only ways to reach this hidden gem. Photo courtesy of letdown Looking to rent a car? I flailed that time, too, and had much worse bruises to show for it. Granted, I was trying to dive that time, so I went in at an awkward angle. Anywhoo… I knew the key this time was to not waste any time floundering on my decision.
I did this some years ago, twice. A friend who had been on the dive team in school did it feet first to test it, and see if he could dive head first a second time. After the first jump he changed his mind. Thanks for sharing, Phil. And I can totally understand your friend not wanting to dive in. That is so awesome that you did that. We did the cliff dive today and you will be happy to know that they installed a brand new ladder just a few days ago. My wife and I went to Kona on our 48th anniversary, invited my daughter and granddaughter to come along, my granddaughter suggested lets go to green beach, so we headed for green beach, on the way there we saw a sign that said south point, we made the turn and wow, heard people having a great time, once I saw the jump stand I knew I had to try it, my daughter and my granddaughter tried to talk me out of it, my wife knew I would jump, well I got my swim trunks on and a couple of the locals gave me a few pointers, I got on the stand made the jump, it was amazing, hit the water perfect, however the climb out was a little tricky,.

It was so much fun! The ladder climb back up was more difficult than I anticipated and there is an option to climb up some rocks if you swim to them. I highly recommend jumping as many times as you can. A fun jump-off spot on the southern tip of the Big Island. The jump is not too high and you can camp in the area. You'll also likely run into locals fishing in the area.
I was nervous for sure and had to build myself up to doing it, but I did it and am pumped for sure as well as proud as heck! What a rush! Don't just come to take a look. Bring your trunks and tell yourself that you're jumping in before you get there. Don't linger too long on the edge if you are like me and can be easily talked out of jumping off something tall. If the waves are rough - don't jump. But don't walk away from the southernmost point of the US without getting wet.
There are two ladders to climb out, but if that's not your style, swim to the right of the ladders and around the rock, there is a nearly stair-like climb out of the water on rocks.
Bring your snorkel and goggles and look for yourself before you leave - the clearest water we had snorkeled on the Big Island! Clearer and deeper than Two Step. Would not recommend swimming in the hole you'll see what I mean , but still another interesting rock formation and feature here. There are strong ocean currents here and it can be very dangerous. Do not jump if the waves are rough. You could be quickly swept way out to sea.
There were two ways to climb out of the water after jumping. The first and most obvious way to climb out is the ladder that extends down into the water.
