Stacie Raucci, Union College (NY) Sex and Gender in Antiquity: Fall Syllabus for a course that examines representations of gender and sexuality in ancient Greece and Rome, using literature, artwork, and archaeological evidence to reconstruct definitions of the masculine and feminine. The course also includes an ethics component. She is the author of “Elegiac Eyes: Vision in Roman Love Elegy” (Lang Classical Studies, ) and of articles on the reception of the ancient world in popular culture. Her teaching spans Greek and Latin language and literature to courses in translation on sex and gender in antiquity, the ancient world in film, and Roman topography. This paper compares the Greco-Roman world's gender construct and the contemporary period's gender norms. It also talks about the gradual changes in today's gender norms. Unfortunately, the influence of classical antiquity on the current definition of gender and sex has not been adequately recognized or appreciated.



The topic of this course is Slavery in the United States, but its primary objective is to teach you to become fully versatile in conducting research and fully competent in writing long research papers. In the first few weeks of the course you will become familiar with the issues and debates that have driven the scholarship on American slavery. This will provide the necessary context for you to conduct primary source research on the topic. The course will then turn its attention to research and writing.
