The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will ask mobility companies for proposals in early February, a spokesperson for the department said. One or more bidders could be selected. Another interested company is Denver Bike Sharing, the nonprofit that partnered with B-cycle for the last 10 years. Executive Director Mike Pletsch is in talks with two unnamed companies that might contract with the organization and go after the city contract together.

The nonprofit is working on taking out its stations today, Pletsch said. A fleet of bikes will be dispersed to other cities with B-cycle equipment and possibly to some local nonprofits. Advocates for more non-car transportation options are not taking a stance on that piece, but on Thursday, they did lay out their ideal scenario for the future.

Reps from the Denver Streets Partnership, a coalition of sustainable transport advocates, said they want to see the service available for free or low-cost, which would require city subsidies. Taxpayers helped fund B-cycle annually to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The exact amount depended on the year. Many of you have asked what we have been doing over the last months and the future of Denver Bike Sharing. We participated, submitted our proposal on April 30, and last week we were notified we were not selected. Our goal was to continue a non-profit led, local, community based system with a product vendor with our same values that would allow us to expand and grow.

We could not talk about our program at the time but here was our vision:. Couple of closing notes about Denver B-cycle. Some have asked what did we do with the bikes? We re-purposed them all. We sold some to other B-cycle cities that are expanding and we donated bikes to NETC to support their neighborhood bike libraries.

So you will still see them tooling around and hopefully that makes you smile as much as it does us. The long-term goal of denver bike sharing is to offer a public bike sharing system of 1, bikes and stations to denver residents and guests.

Share Your Story. Donate Share. Earth Force, Inc. In addition, both Lyft and Lime will fund and partner with the city on a large-scale engagement plan to educate people on proper riding and parking of vehicles. In addition, each company will also offer reduced rates for Denver residents in need-based programs and offer free ride opportunities for residents, regardless of income level.

More information to come on these programs - and how people will qualify - as they get closer to rolling out. The licenses will replace how dockless electric scooter and bike companies previously operated in Denver, which was through a permit.
