Despite using the name from Carroll Shelby's first-generation Shelby Mustang GT, this anniversary car was little more than a white-on-red Mustang with stickers and a not very cool turbocharged I-4 under hood.

Carroll Shelby was understandably unhappy about the naming "coincidence. Fourth Generation Limited to just units, the Mustang Cobra R is perhaps the coolest Mustang ever made. Top-five at any rate. With a hp 5. More than a decade before Ford decided Mustangs should go around corners, the Cobra R set the standard for things to come. To show I'm an equal-opportunity hater, please let me present my old Mustang as the lamest of the fourth generation Mustangs.

The Mustang Spring Feature Edition was perhaps the least interesting of the various special edition fourth-gen cars. Both the hood scoop and side scoops were non-functional, so about the only 'performance enhancements' were black vinyl "GT" racing stripes on the hood, and black "MUSTANG" inserts in the rear bumper.

The 3, Spring Feature editions built were as far as I can tell an easy way for Ford to get rid of excess 35th Anniversary Edition parts. Thankfully, Mustang special editions only got cooler after , as the Mustang Bullitt and Mustang Mach 1 show. Like the Cobra R the generation before, the Boss was focused on road racing. Building off the Boss —which featured adjustable shocks, upgraded brakes, wheels, and tires, and mechanical changes to boost horsepower to and raise the redline to 7, rpm among other things —the Laguna Seca edition was built to beat BMW M3s around demanding racetracks like Laguna Seca, home of our Best Driver's Car competition.

The limited-run Laguna Seca edition ditched the rear seat in favor of a cross brace, got stickier and wider tires, a stiffer suspension setup, extra cooling capabilities, and more aggressive body work. As you'll see, it set the stage for my favorite sixth-generation Mustang.

Fifth Generation Lamest: Mustang California Special. If you're noticing a theme here, so am I. It turns out I really don't like badge-and-trim packages on Ford performance cars.

Clearly, the variants of the Shelby Mustangs weren't satisfactory to Ford, because in they brought the Shelby GT back, but this time it was equipped with a 5. There was also the GTKR model as well that could hit hp.

By the time rolled around, GTs were capable of hp. If you think Ford was finished at that point, then you're sorely mistaken. In Ford took this performance vehicle to the next level. They introduced an all-new Shelby Mustang GT that was capable of cranking out an astounding hp from its 5. Horsepower wasn't the only feature the new GT was bringing to the table. It also received upgrades to the brakes, suspension, and tires as well.

Keep this classic safe with a custom Mustang gt car cover! This was the vehicle that started it all. The public grew to love Mustangs that housed the V8. When you cranked the key, the engine would roar to life which enraptured a lot of people. With its relatively small body and powerful engine, people enjoyed the agility and power that the vehicle provided when you took it out onto the road. Also, the car looked absolutely gorgeous. You'd think with a name like the Mustang Mach 1, this would be the fastest Mustang out there.

Well, you certainly wouldn't be mistaken with that assessment. The Mach 1 was first introduced in , and it was a performance vehicle through and through. It came with three powerful V8s which included the cubic inch Cobra Jet, a powerful engine that could leave a hole in the road if you drove fast enough. The second Mach 1 would be introduced in This new Mach 1 was more powerful than ever.

However, it had to survive the era of the Mustang II. Thus it was downgraded to a V6 engine in Somehow, was Mach 1's best year regarding sales. Having disappeared for decades, the Mach 1 made yet another grand appearance in This time the Mustang sported a high output V8 engine that could generate hp. The exterior was changed to match the look of the original Mach 1 from the 60s pleasing fans to no end.

One of the most iconic Mustangs of all time, the Shelby Mustang GT offered the first version of the Mustang that was completely track-focused. The GT is capable of squeezing out hp from its cubic inch V8. This was the perfect vehicle for trans-am racing.

Check out car covers for your Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. With the rear seat removed, the GT tore up the track and quickly made a name for itself. The Bullitt Mustang returned in on the sixth-generation model, but the model remains the first authentic tribute car that generated the most hype.

The Laguna Seca was a further upgrade to the Boss Ford basically moved it even closer to the race car by adding Recaro seats, a limited-slip differential, stiffer suspension and a larger rear wing.

Ford also removed the rear seats to add an x-brace to increase structural rigidity and added performance tires and racing brake ducts. The sixth-generation Mustang also deserves a place on this list. The supercharged, 5. Production is limited to 5, units. Do you like classic or modern? Are you a fan of race-ready or daily drivers? Do you like sleepers or Mustangs that have "performance" written all over them? Ford built a long list of cool Mustang models that can be considered the best.

I think these are the best Mustangs ever built. The first-generation model is the best-selling Mustang to date. Sold for almost 10 years with various facelifts and upgrades, the first-gen Mustang was immensely popular and Ford moved no fewer than 2. The third-gen model comes second with 2. No other generation managed to hit the two-million mark. The fourth-gen moved 1. In third place comes with , examples.

No other model year has hit the ,unit mark since then. When it comes to best selling years of each generation, the Mustang II hit its peak in with , units. The third-gen model sold , in , its first year on the market.

The fourth-generation pony set its record in , when the facelift model moved , units. The fifth-gen Mustang peaked at , in , while the sixth-gen model had its best year in with , examples sold. The Mustang is one of the most iconic cars built in America. It hit the market as an affordable, easy-to-maintain vehicle that was also powerful and fast. It quickly evolved into a performance benchmark during the muscle car era and it managed to survive the oil crisis and other automotive challenges from the s and s.

Unlike its main rivals, it remained in production continuously and while sales have dropped in recent decades, it remains a desirable car and a symbol of American performance and engineering. No Mustang will crash if you handle it properly.

Ford quickly noticed a demand for higher performance versions of the Mustang so it teamed up with Carroll Shelby to create a lighter, no-frills, and more powerful variant of the Mustang. The Mach 1 was available with four engine options, including the mad 7. You could even order a Drag Pack to turn the mill into a Super Cobra Jet by means of a solid lifter cam, Holley carbs, and a rotating assembly with forged pistons.

Steve McQueen turned the Mustang Bullitt into a legend back in the late s. It looks decidedly aggressive thanks to its massive vents and race-inspired side skirts and rear wing, but also because it's powered by an amazing engine. Ciprian Florea.
