Both of these conditions are usually difficult to detect. For example, research scientists have used BEAM to map the electrical activity involved in the movement of a monkey's arm. The studies have shown that when the monkey anticipates moving its arm, the pattern of electrical activity in its brain changes. If efforts like these are successful, it may one day be possible to use computers and the electrical activity of the brain to control the movement of artificial limbs.
