He was taken into police custody the day before his sensational escape. The Guntur urban police, under the supervision of the then SP Ake Ravi Krishna conducted a combing operation in the Kondapalli reserve forest spread over 30, acres for five days, enlisting the support of the Vijayawada and Krishna district police. However, their efforts did not fructify. Later, the Mangalagiri police lodged a complaint with the Ibrahimpatnam police station and the Guntur Urban police formed special teams to nab the notorious criminal.

The then home minister, Sabita Indra Reddy too announced that the police would soon arrest Samba as special teams had been formed to nab him. According to police sources, Samba who is a school drop-out from the Prattipadu town in Guntur district, is mentally disturbed but not insane.

He was a hyperactive child and had made several attempts to sexually harass his teachers, neighbourhood girls and his own cousins when he was young. He had reportedly committed several crimes across 10 districts, including murder of women, over a period of one year.

The SP, however, said that Sambasiva Rao had left Guntur district and there were no reports of incidents involving him in the district since the time he escaped successfully.

Sources said the police were grilling him as to why he was always choosing women as his targets. Police have also summoned Samba's parents and other relatives to identify him. Sources said Samba was a hyperactive child and had made several attempts to sexually harass girls when he was young. Troubled with his behavior, the parents got him married. However, Samba left from home a year after the marriage and started looking for lonely women.

Last week, police received information about a person with similar facial features working in hotels and set up surveillance. They have also identified his hideout on the outskirts of the town. There was so much unrest about the madman that four months ago locals of Atmakur attacked an innocent youth and killed him assuming that he was the person.

Though Sambasiva had committed several crimes across 10 districts, including murder of women, over a period of one year, the police say that they do not have information on his entire crime career as no complaints were lodged in many cases. They could register cases against him only in connection with the murder of a woman in Guntur district and other theft cases. It is said that the Guntur police have sent special teams to the places where he had committed the crimes earlier suspecting that he might be taking shelter at those places.

Guntur urban SP A Ravi Krishna exuded confidence in apprehending Sambasiva soon but refused to divulge the information on the search operation which is going on notwithstanding the inclement weather in the forest.
