In his 13th Homily on Philippians he wrote:. These women [Euodia and Syntyche] seem to me to be the chief to kephalion of the Church which was there, and he [Paul] commends them to some notable man whom he calls his yokefellow; he [Paul] commends them to him, as to a fellow-worker, and fellow-soldier, and brother, and companion, as he does in the Epistle to the Romans, when he says, I commend to you Phoebe our sister , who is a minister of the church at Cenchrea Romans Homilies on Philippians, 13 [5].

Euodia and Syntyche were involved in significant Christian ministry, possibly as leaders. Lydia is another woman connected with the Philippian church. Lydia was the first convert to Christianity in Philippi. In fact, she was the first convert in Europe.

Lydia was a wealthy woman Acts , and probably had a relatively spacious home. We know that the fledgeling Philippian church met in her home Acts Philippi was the chief city of Macedonia Acts and it has been well documented that Macedonian women enjoyed greater freedom and powers than many other women of that time.

Tarn and G. Griffith in Hellenistic Civilisation, 3 rd Edition, , pp. Considering the freedom that women had in Macedonia, and that she was the mistress of her own home, Lydia may have been the leader as well as the host of the first Philippian house church.

Or perhaps Euodia and Syntyche were diakonoi , like some other first-century Christian women, such as Phoebe of Cenchrea.

That Paul addressed Euodia and Syntyche personally and individually, reinforces the idea that these women had considerable influence in the Philippian church, and possibly were leaders. Were Euodia and Syntyche quarrelling? This is the assumption most people have, and some Bible versions convey this assumption in their translations. It is not at all unusual for two people in a church to have different views, yet Paul never states that the women were quarrelling.

In the preceding verses in Philippians, Paul had been encouraging mature people to have the same view as himself—of reaching out for the goal of spiritual perfection Phil. The speculations are endless on this point. Paul also mentions a man called Clement. We do not know who Clement was,[14] except that he worked with Paul, Euodia, and Syntyche, and other unnamed ministry colleagues. Their service and ministry is not remembered by the church today, but it is remembered by God cf.

Acts Our salvation is assured as long as we keep abiding in Jesus Christ and keep walking with him. See Revelation , especially verse 5b! He wanted the Philippians to live in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ Phil. These women were actively involved in significant ministry, some as leaders. Many have names that are very unfamiliar to English speakers. It means: to contend on the side of someone; to cooperate vigorously with a person; or, to make every effort in the cause of, or support of something.

By inference Stephanas, Fortunatus and Achaicus can be added to this list 1 Cor. I exhort Euodia, and exhort Syntyche, to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yea, I beseech you also, true yokefellow, help these women. Some say Paul here exhorts his own wife; but it is not so, but some other woman, or the husband of one of them. You are gifted. The article that you indicate is carefully argued, however, it appears to me that this commentary seems to me to exercise the fallacy of interpolation reading the doctrine of election into passages rather than letting the passages speak for themselves rather than using exegesis per se.

It seems to me that they are straining at a gnat to negate free moral agency or human volition. The names of two born again women are in the book of life Euodia and Syntyche. The context implies they have eternal life. There is a distinctive book where only those who have eternal life are recorded. Those not written in this book are cast into the Lake of Fire. Here is an article by the famous scholar F. It is used of natural life, Ps. In later Judaism and the NT it is used of the life of the age to come.

Thus Is. So in the NT the book of life is the roster of believers, e. At the last judgment everyone not enrolled in the book of life is consigned to the fiery lake Rev. The same idea is expressed in Lk. Your email address will not be published. Notify me of followup comments via e-mail.

Philippians b ». Philippians by Grant Richison Feb 18, Philippians 2 comments. Daniel TriH on January 18, at am. I have question regarding the verse 3b, about book of life. Clement reminds us they struggled with the same temptations we do. In fact his letter suggests that the deaths of the apostles Peter and Paul were probably brought about due to envy and strife among Christians: "Through jealousy and envy the greatest and most righteous pillars Peter and Paul were persecuted and contended unto death.

Clement's letter to the Corinthians continued to be read in the Corinthian church as part of the liturgy for many years. The letter was popular among other churches throughout the ancient Roman world as well. Written by a man who had known Peter and Paul, who had a pastor's heart for all Christians, it was a great source of strength and guidance for early churches.

Clement's Prayer for Then and Now The prayer at the conclusion of Clement's letter easily spans the centuries to become a prayer for Christians today: May God, who seeth all things, and who is the Ruler of all spirits and the Lord of all flesh - who chose our Lord Jesus Christ and us through Him to be a peculiar people - grant to every soul that calleth upon His glorious and holy Name, faith, fear, peace, patience, long-suffering, self-control, purity, and sobriety, to the well-pleasing of His Name, through our High Priest and Protector, Jesus Christ, by whom be to Him glory, and majesty, and power, and honor, both now and forevermore.

Clement of Rome's complete First Letter to the Corinthians has been reprinted as part of Christian History Institute's series of Pocket Classics which can be found under "early church" at this web site.

Biblical quotes call to holiness Clement's letter is permeated with Scriptural references at least quotes from both the Old and New Testaments , and he skillfully wove the Scriptural quotes together to encourage the Corinthians to return to their holy calling, to "attend to what is good, pleasing, and acceptable in the sight of Him who formed us.
