How many dire wolves die in game of thrones

Things you buy through our links may earn New York a commission. On Game of Thrones , Arya and Nymeria have gotten this right twice. In season eight, Ghost fought at the Battle of Winterfell and stood alongside the surviving soldiers at the funeral pyre. The pup has since grown into a fearsome, wild creature, and has become the alpha of a pack of very aggro wolves, which by Westerosi standards is absolutely a feminist win.

Besides Nymeria, Ghost was the only other direwolf to survive the events of Game of Thrones. Despite being the runt, Ghost grew to be the biggest direwolf of the pack. Ghost also participated in many fights, including the Battle of Winterfell. Many of the Starks shared similarities with their direwolf counterparts, to the point that Game of Thrones fans began to theorize that the fate of the direwolves would connect to the outcome of their owners.

The theory may not have played out as many had predicted, but there are some correlations. Arya is a leader and very protective of her family. She had a lot to give but has decided to leave her family behind and go off on her own. Nymeria did something similar as she was forced to leave her home at a young age and learned to fend for herself as she found another role. Ghost was the odd one out as the albino of the litter, something that Jon struggled with as the bastard child of the Starks.

The Direwolf needed a role in the world, just as it seemed Jon was destined to work for the Night's Watch. Robb and Rickon were killed in a despicable fashion just like their direwolves. Summer sacrificed herself just as Bran gave up his mind and body to become the Three-Eyed Raven. Then there's Sansa , who often suffered the consequences of other people's actions, just like Lady. The Stark never had a chance in her early life but she grew into an admirable woman.

The death of her direwolf was another motivator for Sansa to overcome her oppressors. The fate of the Stark direwolves didn't exactly play out on-screen in the same fashion as it did in George R. The direwolves were introduced in the first episode of the series, when Lord Ned Stark and his children stumbled upon a family of orphaned pups.

While Ned believed it would be more merciful to kill them, Jon convinced him that the Stark kids were meant to raise these pups since direwolves are the symbol of their house. Arya set her direwolf free during the first season after Nymeria jumped in to defend her against Prince Joffrey Baratheon. The pair were briefly reunited in Season 7, when Arya decided to head home to Winterfell after learning that her siblings took back their castle. Much like Arya, Nymeria has grown into a force to be reckoned with as the leader of a pack of wild wolves.

After recognizing Nymeria, Arya calls out to her direwolf and invites her to come home with her, but she realizes neither of them are the same as when they were last together.

So Arya watches on as Nymeria takes off with her pack, sad but understanding that this was the right path for both of them. Adopted by Bran, Summer was a fierce protector from the start. Ned Stark executed Lady himself in place of Ser Illyn Payne because, being from the North, " she deserves better than a butcher. Grey Wind was then decapicated and his head sewn onto Robb's headless corpse, and they were mockingly paraded around The Twins in "Mhysa".

Summer , Bran's direwolf, saved his life from the cutthroat in season 1. When the Night King and his army of the dead attacked the cave in "The Children", Summer fought the Wights in order to buy time for Bran and Meera to escape.

Unfortunately, Summer was killed. Shaggydog , Rickon's black direwolf, accompanied his owner and Osha to House Umber, who betrayed them to Ramsay Bolton. Shaggydog was killed and beheaded by the Umbers; Ramsay later wrote Jon Snow a letter that he was using Shaggydog's fur as a rug. Nymeria was chased into the forest by her owner, Arya , to save her from being killed by the Lannisters in "The King's Road".
