This beautiful Palladian mansion at Basildon Park and Gardens in a wonderful position above the River Thames was built in Basildon Park House fell on hard times early in the 20th century and was rescued and restored by Lord and Lady Iliffe and is now filled with fine pictures and fine furniture. The interior has notable delicate plasterwork, an elegant staircase and unusual Octagon Room. The formal gardens are limited , with borders around the house, and a small rose garden but the spectacular setting and the beautiful house makes this a good visit for those interested not only in gardens but historic houses.
Basildon Park holds a collection heavy in 17thth century English and European paintings, including a series of Apostles by Batoni, a garden still life by the supremely talented 18th-century female artist Anne Vallayer-Coster, and a display of drawings by Sutherland for his Coventry Cathedral tapestry. The furniture is mainly 18th-century English and European; a particularly magnificent instance is a state bed c.
The oldest item in the Basildon Park collection far predates the house: a 13th-century Yingqing ceramic funerary vase which, at an unknown date, was pierced and mounted as a lamp. Sitting elegantly in hectares acres of historic parkland and gardens, this 18th-century house was purchased by Lord and Lady Iliffe in the s, when it was de-requisitioned after the Second World War. With extraordinary vision, the Iliffes brought Basildon Park back to life, acquiring a collection of fine furnishings and carefully selected Old Masters.
The wooded parkland offers glorious seasonal colour, with spring bluebells, summer buttercups and autumn leaves, while the landscape has been carefully restored to offer wonderful views, peaceful trails and picnic places, with areas for children to run and play.
