When was conference center built
It was originally designed to hold 26, people. Instead it can seat 21, in the main auditorium and an additional in a smaller auditorium. From the top back of the balcony to the podium is the length of a football field, and the stage area could fit the entire Salt Lake Tabernacle.
The main auditorium's carpet is patterned with tares, and the upholstery on the chairs is embroidered with wheat. The wheat represents the bread of life. The carpet and upholstery is meant to reduce reverberation, which is perfect for speakers at the pulpit but is more of a challenge for the choir and orchestra to make themselves heard.
They use amplification, and the choir seats have speakers among them so that the choir can hear each other. An estimated tons of fabricated steel imported from Belgium holds up the roof without columns. There are 50, miles of electrical wire in the building--enough to circle the earth twice.
There are 60 interpreting booths downstairs that translate conference talks into 92 different languages. This is second only to the United Nations. Bingley Hall was a primary meeting and exhibition space and before it succumbed to fire in , hosted several key events, including cattle shows, concerts and boxing matches. Opened in , the ICC is a major exhibition centre comprising ten halls which can accommodate up to 8, visitors. The site also houses Symphony Hall, a 2, seat concert hall, alongside shops and cafes.
Facilities typically include self-contained conference buildings, break-out rooms, exhibition spaces, dedicated dining rooms and social areas. In April , President Gordon B. Hinckley of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced plans for a new "great hall" to accommodate church membership.
The building was to hold four to five times as many people as the historic church Tabernacle — a number President Hinckley himself said might not be met initially. But crowds have exceeded expectations ever since that "great hall," the LDS Conference Center, was opened in April When it was dedicated on Oct. During a prayer to dedicate the center, President Hinckley said the building and other surrounding church properties were a "testimony of the strength and vitality of God's work.
Later, President Hinckley noted, "It is not a museum piece, although the architecture is superb. It is a place to be used in honor to the Almighty and for the accomplishment of his eternal purposes. Since its dedication, the Conference Center has become home to the world-renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Galleries of original artwork grace its halls.
Noted musicians and artisans have performed there. It has been a setting for grand productions, including "Light of the World" during the Winter Olympic Games. Each year, hundreds of thousands of people visit the building. It is not, however, set aside as a place for proselyting like the adjoining Temple Square. But this boldness is in harmony with the tremendous outreach of the church across the world. The Conference Center has been said to be the largest auditorium in the world dedicated to religious worship and a legacy of President Hinckley's tenure as leader of the LDS Church.
It has a 7,pipe organ, was built with , cubic yards of concrete, has a foot spire and four-acre meadow on top. It was built from the same granite with which the Salt Lake Temple was constructed in the 19th century.
