Fast forward to and what has been happening in the landscape of treaty jurisdiction. The tribunal found in that Maori did not cede their sovereignty in Te Tiriti o Waitangi. It also introduced a set of principles which embodied the intention of both treaties in an attempt to mediate the differences in the two versions.

The Waitangi Tribunal developed the core of an interpretation of the meaning of the treaty that could and should be applied in contemporary New Zealand. A long-standing education campaign about the Treaty of Waitangi has also helped non-indigenous New Zealanders to appreciate the significance of the treaty relationship. The first settlement, in respect of the Waitomo Caves, involved the transfer of land and a loan. A contract will work only if both groups who sign it trust that the other group will do what the contract says they will do.

Now, we have the Waitangi Tribunal. Claims can also be made about what the Government is doing right now. The Waitangi Tribunal claims are not only about land. After the Waitangi Tribunal has listened to the claim, it decides whether a government in the past, or the Government now, acted in a way that broke a promise given in the Treaty.
