This replica of an old Texas town was first a set for a Western movie on the battle of the Alamo , but it remained a tourist attraction for almost fifty years. The idea for the complex was developed by James Tullis Happy Shahan after he was elected mayor of Brackettville in The town's economy had been ailing since the army deactivated Fort Clark in Shahan persuaded Paramount Studios to film Arrowhead at Brackettville in Artisans from Mexico made adobe bricks as they were made three centuries ago.
More than a million bricks were used to construct , square feet of permanent buildings. The road curved left just before a ridge, and past crumbling adobe walls, we came to a stop at an old-timey trading post inside the dusty and iconic Alamo Village, about 10 miles northeast from Brackettville. Come ready to buy. The actor, who would come to play Davy Crockett in the movie, had previously chosen a site in Mexico for filming until Texas landowner and Brackettville Mayor Happy Shahan and others convinced him otherwise.
You gotta do one or the other. Shahan spent two years constructing the replica Alamo battle site as it would have looked in earlys San Antonio, and then reconstructing it after floods in and washed away the adobe bricks. About yards from the Alamo compound, Shahan also built a frontier town and a deserted Mexican village.
The general store, saloon, stables, jail, church, bank, hotels, and a blacksmith shop have served as the backdrop for dozens of classic Western movies, miniseries, documentaries, music videos, and commercials. Between and , Alamo Village was open to the public for tours and gun-fighting shows, and people came from all continents to experience the Old West, at least as it had appeared on the silver screen.
The Shahans, Happy and his wife, Virginia, collected and displayed their Old West memorabilia until she passed away, at age 92, in , when the site was closed, the gates locked.
The prospective new owner wanted to buy the long-closed Alamo Village movie set and reopen it as a Texas-style Old West theme park, similar to Old Tucson in Arizona.
