Why does 2nd gear pop out
If so, this requires a trans overhaul to repair. Originally Posted by sunsprit. I'd just learn to live with it. It won't hurt to go first to third. I had a '48 Chev 3-speed that did that, had to double clutch down into low if it went below third gear stalling speed. That was a nuisance.
Thanks so much for the help everyone! My uncle knows a mechanic and he said it was probably the synchros going which would be an expensive fix he did not look at the car though. If had the car for a while and as it was my first car I really don't want it to go, but if it was a pricy fix, maybe its time.

So i'm at a red light, it turns green, launch in 1st, accelerate a little, shift to 2nd, just when i'm about to accelerate, it pops out into neutral, try to put it back in gear, pops again!
It's become a nightmare to my driving! Right now i would just take 1st gear higher a little to make up for the loss of acceleration in 2nd and just shift to 3rd.
It doesn't happen all the time, but I noticed that the time that it DOES happen is when: a I dump the clutch after shifting to 2nd. My questions are, what's the problem?
What causes this? What can i do about this? Help me! Please and thanks! I remember that the first few weeks when I drove stick on the road I sometimes did this thing where I would put it in first or second, and I guess it would engage, but then it would suddenly pop out, sometimes with a loud ping and the engine would rev Post by vedran » Fri Mar 14, pm when it "pops" out, do you hear a grinding noise?

I was just wondering, it maybe what I think it is That is, when youre driving and a gear pops out. I've been having a weird problem lately that may or may not be a pop out. Sometimes I'll down shift from third to second, and the gear wont go in all the way. I will have to double clutch it to get it in again. Friend said it maybe a synchro, another said maybe just need a clutch adjustment, since this car was an automatic and made manual by the previous owner.
Any information on what this could be and the correct definition of a "pop out" would be greatly appreciated! Sort by date Sort by votes. I too have this same problem, when im going slow enough and only in 2nd gear it will pop out at a certain rpm and it wont go in until I hit the gas and kinda force it in, either that or throw it in 3rd Ive been told its the syncros in the tranny. A way to test to see if yours are good or not, while idling and not pushing in the clutch, try pushing it into all the gear and you should see the rpms drop very slightly, if they drop and you hear no grinding the syncros are doing theyre job and that gear is fine.
Now if you put some force on a gear and you hear the wonderful grinding, your syncro might be bad on that gear.
This is how I tested all my gears. Only 2nd gear grinds when I do this test time for a rebuild soon. Upvote 0. ChiTownHussla Proven Member. I think it could be an adjustment issue. Does 4th ggive you issues also? ChiTownHussla said:. Click to expand I can assure everyone that it is not the syncro causing it to come out of gear. The only job of the syncro is to slow the gear down when the slider presses against it while locking the gear the gear.
If it is coming out of gear than it is either an external problem with the shifter or cables, or it is an internal problem. Restotech said:. Could also be a bent shift fork. It is definitely internal. Spooled said:. The shift rods between the shifter and transmission would become damaged well before this happens.
If this were even a problem it would be due to low transmission fluid promoting high internal temperatures or the welds on the shift fork rod assembly would fail generally WAY before they would bend. Those forks are made of steel and they are solid. I have seen it. Most likely from someone trying to slam gears I could only assume. Car has just over , miles on it now. I thought maybe it could simply be a worn out clutch, I could only wish, but I haven't looked at it just yet If the gear syncros need replaced I may as well get a junk yard transmission and replace the whole thing because those syncros are NOT cheap to fix bought new.
Something else internally is at fault for that then, not jamming gears. Most likely from someone reassembling the case improperly after a rebuild. But if it wasn't from a rebuild, then it was most likely foreign debris. Diana Nam said:. Do you plan to keep the car?
Taking the transmission out is a fair bit of work and a bunch of down time.
