As the tributes poured in for Italy's Marco Simoncelli, who died following a crash during the Malaysian MotoGP in Sepang on Sunday, other riders were warned that the fatality was unpreventable. Franco Uncini, the MotoGP riders' safety representative, said in a radio interview: "I think we've done plenty for safety and we are very satisfied. Unfortunately in our hands we don't have the power to change fate.

At first officials were looking to restart the race before the extent of Simoncelli's injuries became clear. The race was cancelled amid confusion in the grandstand, with fans throwing bottles to show their initial displeasure. The officials said that, when the track medics got to him, he was in cardiac arrest.

They tried to resuscitate him in the ambulance and the medical centre. The saddest thing is that Valentino [Rossi] and Marco were very close friends. He and Valentino are absolutely devastated.
