The Tibetan Plateau contains the largest volumes of ice outside the Arctic and Antarctic, feeding water to dozens of major Asian rivers. However, the rapid warming of the "Water Tower of Asia" has significantly affected regional hydrological cycle and ecosystem services, leading to remarkable glacier retreat and geohazard disasters such as landslides, debris flows and glacial lake outbursts. To disentangle and quantify the relative contributions of different external forcings in the observed warming, Zhou and his team used CMIP5, an archive of comprehensive climate models, in which historical simulations are driven by individual external forcings. That history began around million years ago, during a previous tectonic collision with the Asian plate. By the time the Indian subcontinent began its collision, parts of what is now the plateau were already as high as 4.

But as the collision of the Indian plate with Asia continued, the land continued to rise, and sediment eroded from the mountain ranges eventually filled in the valley, forming a high flat plateau, he says. But to really understand the history of the Tibetan Plateau, the paleoaltimetry method needs to incorporate the geologic history of the region, he adds.
