Lapa Rios consists of 16 open-sided, thatched-roof bungalows , scattered along a steep hillside that ends steps away from the beach. Each bungalow is fit with top-of-the-line furnishings, such as netted beds, ceiling fans, indoor and outdoor showers, and a private deck with lounge chairs and hammock. Since the room is completely open, it allows the sounds of wildlife and the ocean breeze to enter. The further down the hill you are, the closer you are to the ocean.

Those on the higher up rooms are then closer to the lobby and pool area. To go from one side of the hill to the other, you can use the steps. To help you immerse yourself in the experience, the hotel has no electronic devices on the rooms.

Instead, the front desk provides you with walkie talkies and a solar light to walk around the property when it gets darker. Located right on the edge of the protected forest areas of Osa Peninsula, Lapa Rios teems with wildlife and vegetation. Due to its remote location, there are no towns or restaurants nearby. The property has miles of private trails in the rainforest , where you get a chance to spot rivers, waterfalls, natural pools, and the local wildlife. The lodge provides boots, walking sticks, and socks so you can hike more comfortably among the rainforest. Some hikes are long, so bring water and repellent—Here in the jungle, the level of humidity is high!

In addition, explore the jungle trails to various beaches. The two beaches in front of Lapa Rios are safe for swimming , and there are surfing lessons available, too.

After your excursions, staff is ready to provide you with water. Then we moved on to fillets of tilapia fish with a sensational sauce of limes, chilli and coriander. The melting organic chocolate hot cakes which followed were amazing.

This is the only negative you could find in an otherwise impressive kitchen. The waiting staff are all exceptionally friendly and kind, and bring considerable ceremony to an otherwise informal dinner, by producing courses at the same time on massive trays.

Lapa Rios is in a unique position on the migration corridor of enormous numbers of birds : just sit on the observation deck and borrow a pair of binoculars. These more challenging hikes are offered on alternate days, and take around 6 hours each, depending on your pace.

They're the best way to get right into the primary rainforest. Your guide interprets the whole chaotic ecosystem for you, while you marvel at the extraordinary variety of trees, fungi, butterflies and birds. It's an unforgettable experience, apparently, with fabulous wildlife and diverse ecosystems. Only children aged 6 years and upwards are accepted at Lapa Rios due to the lodge being situated on a steep ridge in the rainforest, and there are hazards such as steep drops and high decks attached to the cabins. Children, especially young ones, must be supervised at all times.

That said, children over 6 will love Lapa Rios and are made very welcome here. There are plenty of things to amuse them, from scarlet macaws and spider monkeys in the rainforest to sustainability walks, family-friendly activities many included in the rates , and kind and knowledgeable guides.

Note there are no electronic amusements provided, but who needs them when you're surrounded by jungle? Cabins sleep up to 4, and the Lapa Ocean Villas sleep up to 5.
