There had been talk about a crossing at this point for over 60 years — the first designs were produced in But the project had been controversial. Critics said the planned site was not a particularly busy route and the bridge would be expensive.

Despite opposition the local council was keen to stimulate the local economy and lobbied hard for the bridge to be built. Work finally started in The Humber Bridge now joins east Yorkshire to north Lincolnshire and has become a local landmark that's visible from miles away.

Despite the controversy over its construction the bridge became a popular route for motorists. By it was carrying around , vehicles a week. The bridge has reduced journey times in the region — it cut the road distance between Hull and Grimsby by nearly 50 miles 80km. Engineers constructed the bridge's spans by suspending them from hollow reinforced concrete towers m high.

The Humber was the first major suspension bridge to use concrete in this way where other bridges used steel towers. The cables that hold the deck are mm in diameter and weigh 5, tonnes each. Each cable is made up of 37 strands of lengths made of high tensile galvanised steel wire. Galvanised wire has been protectively coated with zinc. Each cable was designed to take a load of 19, tonnes. Once the cables were in place the deck could be hung from them.

Thanks, Rob. Great point Rob and thanks for sharing this. I have seen them based there and agree they do a fabulous job. That is great to hear Gillian, lovely when someone has such a personal connection with such a notable landmark. Your email address will not be published.

Prices correct as of Autumn Suicide is often attempted from the bridge. Interesting points Dave. Metric compares to a calculator and imperial to a slidestich. Therefore, a suspension bridge with no support piers in mid-stream would not obstruct the estuary. Second, because of the geology and topography of the area, the cost of constructing a tunnel would have been excessive. Work on the construction took eight years, during which time upwards of one thousand workers were employed at times of peak activity.

Traffic first crossed the bridge on 24th June and on 17th July Her Majesty the Queen performed the formal opening ceremony. The Bridge provided an opportunity for the Humber region to realise its potential in commercial and industrial development.
