But there are plenty of other wild things you may not remember about that fateful night -- so let's set the time machine for Oct. The starting lineups were wonderfully weird may not feel like all that long ago, but trust us: A lot can change in more than two decades.

The O's designated hitter? None other than Eddie Murray, while Bobby Bonilla hit cleanup. A year-old Arthur Rhodes appeared in relief that night for Baltimore, as did a year-old Jesse Orosco, in the second of what would be a five-year stint with the club. Also coming out of the O's bullpen that night: Armando Benitez, serving as Baltimore's setup man and still three years away from becoming the closer for the Mets.

And speaking of Benitez The aftermath was complete bedlam Tarasco's reaction was instantly iconic -- pointing at Maier like he'd just had his lunch money stolen, getting closer to right-field umpire Rich Garcia than any one human being had ever gotten to another:.

But that's just the tip of the iceberg. The real fun started a few seconds later: Garcia had hustled all the way to the warning track in right to make that call, which meant that in order to argue the call, the O's had to travel Each year, Coach Butler had a member of the Mets come and speak to the young ballplayers.

Not realizing the irony, the staff was told about 45 minutes prior to his arrival that Tony Tarasco would be coming by to speak that year. While anxious at first, Tony and I shared a nice conversation, and he was a really nice guy.

It had admittedly been a while since the play in , but he made it clear to me that he did not begrudge a young boy for wanting to catch a ball at a game. I had a fun and successful baseball career during my time at Wesleyan and always had supportive teammates.

Toward my senior year, when I approached a longstanding school hits record, media attended my games. Certainly, this was not the norm for a Division III ballplayer who did not project to make the big leagues. It would have been easy to let this get to my head, but while I had always dreamed of playing ball professionally, I knew my skill set only served to get me so far.

For the most part, I have been able to blend anonymously into the public. While sports enthusiasts will remember my name, it is pretty easy to pay with a credit card when I go out to eat or submit a license to prove identity without having to stroll down memory lane and back to The staff member quickly grabbed several coworkers who were Yankees fans to come over to meet me, but thankfully the plane still boarded and took off on time and without disruption.

It is hard enough to draw the ire of ardent Orioles fans, let alone a filled with New Yorkers en route to Florida after a long, cold winter! I am married now, with two kids of my own, and live deep in the heart of Red Sox nation. My wife is a Red Sox fan, as is her entire family. What I remember very nearly as well is the next day at school. Maier was and remains right about my age, and so the actions of this distant New York age group peer of ours was a topic of much discussion.

My eighth grade social studies teacher, Mr. He did give us the real grades eventually. This October will make 24 years since that happened. That is nearly a quarter of a century gone by. Still it haunts me to this day:.

The biggest reason why the question still haunts me is a simple one. Baltimore already had a lot to be proud of, but there is nothing more satisfying than taking down the Yankees in the heart of the Evil Empire.

The Orioles came a historically terrible call away from doing just that. The Yankees won all three games in Baltimore, but the momentum heading into game 3 would have been very different than the split that happened. My bet is that the Orioles would have pulled out one of those games and then clinched at Yankee Stadium, reaching the World Series for the first time since The Orioles did not match up as well as the Yankees did, and while we will never know, my guess is that the Braves would have won back-to-back titles.

The Jeffrey Maier Incident holds up as the single worst moment in Orioles history, but in all honesty it probably did not prevent them from winning it all. Maybe the Orioles would be a great underdog story, but more likely the Braves would cement themselves as an all-time team. More from Orioles History. Next: Ripken and the Kissing Bandit.
