How long to drive to wilsons promontory

2022.01.10 15:44

When in Foster, follow the road down to Yanakie and from there to Tidal River , where you can park your car and start your walks or check in your accommodation. There is also a bus from Melbourne to Wilsons Promontory. It takes you through the same driving route, you may have to change in Koo-Wee-Rup , but this bus connection is excellent. I paid 16 dollars to the Dandenong Ranges. The only downside is that there is no local bus service to the Wilsons Promontory National Park once you get to Foster.

So hiring a car is the most convenient way of exploring this area. From there, it is worth taking a 20 km detour along the coastal drive on the Bunurong Road, further south onto the Cape Peterson Road to Inverloch, the biggest town in the area.

The drive is comfortable and relaxed and offers spectacular views of the ocean, with many outlooks and staircases to the beach. You will not need a GPS navigator; you can either use Google Maps or download an app to get your drive organised.

The distance from Melbourne is kilometres, which means approx. Three hours with no stops but plan between 4 and 5 hours if you want to see all the places. If you plan to stay overnight, the best option is to camp or book a cabin. Wilsons Prom and Tidal river offer varied options ranging from luxury cabins to modest lodges with shared bathroom facilities, to basic camping to glamping facilities.

If camping is not your thing, you need to book your accommodation near Wilsons Promontory. Yanakie is the nearest place, and it offers cottages, lodges and also private accommodation like Airbnb. As for Wilsons Promontory accommodation , you will have to make a choice. If you want to stay centrally located, you are probably better off booking the Wilsons Prom Cabins. If you love camping, Tidal River is the place.

So make sure that you book your trip well in advance. For all accommodation options, check out the Victoria National Parks website. The main reason why people travel to the Prom is walking and seeing wildlife. Over 20 walking tracks ranging from easy, short to long walks with multi-day hikes and overnight hikes.

Tidal River is the main campsite at Wilson Promontory. Yanakie is a 30km drive from the Tidal River Visitor Centre. If you only have one day, you will have to make hard choices. I saw flocks of black swans and various water birds to a breathtaking view over Norman Beach Bay and Squeaky Beach to the highest Tidal Overlook point.

Wilson Promontory offers stunning views and a pristine environment that reminded me of Tasmania. The best way to organise your road trip to Wilsons Prom is to hire a car in Melbourne. You may prefer self-driving to a guided tour, even as a solo traveller. I made this trip on my own and loved it. A road trip is easy and fun, and it allows you to see so much of the country on your way as well as at the Prom because it allows you to drive around freely.

And you will use the car to move around quite often. Like this post? Pin it for later! The trail starts from Lilly Pilly Gully carpark and takes you through a beautiful forest before finishing at a cluster of boulders at the top. From there, you can continue along the sandy track to Little Oberon Bay. This is a beautiful small cove and beach that is a popular little walk in itself. This is a vast beach that is a popular stop on the Southern Circuit overnight hike.

You simply return the same way you came. Starting from Tidal River campground, this walk is a beautiful way to explore the three most popular beaches in the Prom. You have to cross the foot bridge near to the north of the campground and then follow the trail towards Pillar Point. There is a decent hill before it continues down to the boardwalk over Sealers swamp to the cove.

You return the same way. If you plan on camping the night at Sealers Cove, you must have purchased an overnight hikers permit from the Visitors Centre. This is the most popular overnight hike in the national park. The full circuit is around 60km and takes in all the prettiest beaches in the Prom. Most people tackle it in around days with good campsites available at overnight stops.

You can also do a shorter 3 day, 36km overnight circuit that is more popular. Find more information here. The northern part of the Prom is a complete wilderness zone and there are no facilities at the campsites on this overnight hike.

Your full day in the park is all about ticking off some popular walks. Head back to Tidal River for lunch. In the afternoon, head up to Telegraph Station Carpark and hike up to Mt Oberon , the highest peak in the park.

Enjoy the late afternoon sun and the panoramic view before heading back down. Note: You can switch these walks around and do Mt Oberon in the morning to beat the day trip crowds if you prefer. Then you can do Little Oberon Bay in the afternoon. From there, hike up to the summit of Mt Bishop for another incredible viewpoint.
