Skills work in much the same manner, but with some differences: skills work on their own equipment slots, and use skill books, rather than mana eggs, to amplify a set of traits specific to skills. Most skills tend to be of the passive nature, without needing to be cast or activated. Skills are obtained through extraction from skill books, but skill books, unlike mana eggs, cannot be fused.

While substantially better in terms of production values, the plot, characters, and themes feel especially stereotyped, bordering on self-parody. Combat - enhanced by a few mechanical gimmicks, is ruined by poor encounter design. And while I know I should judge this game by its own merits, I just didn't enjoy most of the game. I like the first third of the game. The combat has some more nuances from the first two games, and in some ways they are improvements.

I like the addition of Aerial Finishes, it seems faster, and I really like the overall presentation minus the IP Gauge which is a circle - don't approve of that :. Furthermore, the bosses are challenging, even more so than Grandia II because these guys require strategy in order to beat them.

You could be Level 80 and still be trounced by these bosses if you don't play well. But there still some downsides to all these quality of life mechanics.

As challenging as the bosses are, the standard enemies are plentiful and can sometimes be challenging to the point of being unfair. And because they're so plentiful, it can be legitimately exhausting to fight them all. I also really don't like how you learn or upgrade Special Moves by complete random during combat.
